EU opens antitrust investigation into Meta’s policy about third-party AI services in WhatsApp

Last week, I reported that ChatGPT and Copilot are removing their services from WhatsApp due to a change in Meta's policy. That policy is now under scrutiny in the European Union. The European Commission has opened an antitrust investigation to find out if Meta's rules are hurting the competition. In case you missed it, Meta has updated its terms and conditions, which forbids AI companies from using WhatsApp's Business API to distribute their services. WhatsApp will allow businesses to use AI tools for providing support or ancillary functions like automated customer support, but third-party AI services are pretty much banned. This policy comes into effect on January 15, 2026. Microsoft and OpenAI have announced that Copilot and ChatGPT will no longer be accessible in the popular messaging app due to the new rules. The European Commission is concerned about the situation. A press release from the Commission says, "As a result of the new policy, competing AI providers may be blocked from reaching their customers through WhatsApp. On the other hand, Meta's own AI service 'Meta AI' would remain accessible to users on the platform." The Wall Street Journal reports that a Meta spokesperson said that the commission's claims are

Driving test touts offer instructors £250 monthly kickbacks – BBC

NJ Convery, Bobbi Huyton and Abi Smitton BBC News Investigations Watch the BBC confront Anil Ahmed, 34, who buys driving instructors' login details and then sells tests online at a mark-up. He says the claims we put to him are a "complete fabrication" Driving instructors are being offered kickbacks of up to £250 a month to sell their official test-booking login details to touts, a BBC investigation has found. Touts use these login details to book driving tests in bulk and sell them to learners on WhatsApp and Facebook, charging as much as £500 for tests that should cost no more than £75. This makes it harder for learners to book through legitimate routes and adds to already lengthy waiting times. The BBC has also uncovered evidence that the outgoing head of the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), Loveday Ryder, was told about these operations in February - yet some sellers reported to the DVSA are still operating. In response, the DVSA said it does not comment on specific complaints but has zero tolerance for those exploiting learner drivers. We have identified touts operating in London, Birmingham, Manchester and the Home Counties. Posing as driving instructors, we approached them

EU Opens Antitrust Probe Into Meta’s New AI Policy For WhatsApp – Decrypt

In brief The European Commission launched an antitrust investigation into Meta's policy which blocks AI providers from using WhatsApp's business tools to offer chatbots when AI is the primary service. Meta's policy change allows its own Meta AI to remain accessible on WhatsApp while potentially shutting out competitors from reaching customers through the messaging platform. The probe covers the entire European Economic Area except Italy, investigating whether the company violated competition rules prohibiting abuse of dominant market positions. Europe's competition regulator has opened a formal investigation into tech giant Meta over policy changes that allow the company's own AI chatbot to operate on WhatsApp while blocking rivals from doing the same. The European Commission announced Thursday it's examining whether Meta violated antitrust rules by effectively reserving WhatsApp's AI chatbot access for itself.  The action targets updated business terms WhatsApp rolled out in late October, which ban third-party AI companies from distributing chatbots through the messaging app when AI is their core offering. Under the updated WhatsApp Business Solution Terms, AI providers are "strictly prohibited" from using the business API when AI technologies are "the primary (rather than incidental or ancillary) functionality being made available for use."  “The Commission is concerned

SIM-binding mandate forces changes to WhatsApp use in India | Digital Watch Observatory

Skip to content 3 Dec 2025 Frequent SIM checks and six-hour logouts will change daily WhatsApp use across India. India plans to change how major messaging apps operate under new rules requiring SIM binding and frequent re-verification. The directive obliges platforms to confirm that the original SIM remains active, altering long-standing habits around device switching. Services have 90 days to comply with the order. The Department of Telecom says continuous SIM checks will reduce misuse by linking each account to a live subscriber identity. Companion tools such as WhatsApp Web will automatically log out every 6 hours. Users will need to relink sessions with a QR code to stay connected. The rules apply to apps that rely on phone numbers, including WhatsApp, Signal, Telegram, and local platforms. The approach mirrors SIM-bound verification used in banking apps in India. It adds a deeper security layer that goes beyond one-time codes and registration checks. The change may inconvenience people who use Wi-Fi-only tablets or older devices without an active SIM card. It also affects anyone who relies on WhatsApp Web for work or on multi-device setups under a single number. Messaging apps may need new login systems to ease the shift. Officials
