Elderly couples applying for visas asked to prove marriages are real with WhatsApp chats

Navigation for News Categories WhatsApp is a messaging service owned by Meta. Photo: 123rf Lawyers say elderly couples married for more than 50 years and applying for visas are being asked to prove their relationship is real with WhatsApp chats. They want reform of partnership visas and a different approach to what evidence is requested by Immigration New Zealand (INZ). "They are asking for chat messages between 70-year-olds," said immigration lawyer Pooja Sundar. "There's no balance there, and there's no actual holistic assessment of that individual application. And especially when you're asked to provide such evidence for those who are in their 60s, 70s, 80s, and have lived together for the last 60 years of their lives. "They are asked, 'Why is there no evidence of chat logs or messages or call logs between the two of you? If it's genuine and stable relationship evidence, show me texts that you send each other.' They don't send each other texts, they see each other every day. It's a relationship. They're living the relationship." Partnership visa criteria prioritised proofs such as shared assets and joint utility bills, which was also not possible for some applicants. "It's a thought process that is both

Pwn2Own Hackers Privately Report WhatsApp Zero-Click Vulnerability to Meta

During the Pwn2Own Ireland 2025 hacking competition, held in Cork from October 21 to 23, cybersecurity researchers from Team Z3 withdrew their planned demonstration of a zero-click remote code execution vulnerability in WhatsApp, opting instead to report it privately to Meta through a coordinated disclosure. The withdrawal surprised attendees and fellow competitors, as the exploit could have earned Team Z3 the largest single payout in Pwn2Own history with a record-breaking $1 million bounty. This substantial reward reflected the critical nature of zero-click vulnerabilities in an application used by three billion people worldwide. Private Disclosure Chosen Over Public Demonstration According to the Zero Day Initiative (ZDI), which organizes Pwn2Own, Team Z3 determined their research wasn’t ready for a live public demonstration. Despite the withdrawal, ZDI emphasized the positive outcome of this decision, stating that their analysts would conduct initial assessments before transferring the findings to Meta’s engineering team. This approach ensures a structured response to the vulnerability while protecting WhatsApp’s massive user base from potential exploitation. The private disclosure aligns with ethical hacking standards that prioritize user safety over public spectacle. Meta, WhatsApp’s parent company and a co-sponsor of Pwn2Own Ireland alongside Synology and QNAP, expressed continued interest in Team Z3’s

Pwn2Own WhatsApp Hacker Says Exploit Privately Disclosed to Meta – SecurityWeek

A total of $1,024,750 has been paid out at the Pwn2Own Ireland 2025 hacking contest organized by Trend Micro’s Zero Day Initiative (ZDI), but the event has been overshadowed by the last-minute withdrawal of a researcher who was scheduled to demonstrate a WhatsApp exploit worth $1 million.  The highest reward at Pwn2Own Ireland 2025, $100,000, was paid out for an exploit chain targeting the QNAP Qhora-322 router and the QNAP TS-453E NAS device.  Two Samsung Galaxy S25 exploit chains were each rewarded with $50,000, and the same amount was earned for vulnerabilities in Synology ActiveProtect Appliance DP320 and the Sonos Era 300 smart speaker.  Participants received up to $40,000 for hacking Ubiquiti cameras, QNAP and Synology NAS devices, Lexmark and Canon printers, and smart home systems such as Phillips Hue Bridge, Amazon Smart Plug, and Home Automation Green. A total of 73 previously unknown vulnerabilities were disclosed at Pwn2Own Ireland 2025.  A researcher named Eugene (3ugen3) of Team Z3 was scheduled to demonstrate a $1 million zero-click remote code execution exploit against WhatsApp on Thursday.  However, the demonstration did not take place. U.S. court orders Israeli spyware firm NSO to stop spying on WhatsApp users

A U.S. court has ordered Israel’s NSO Group to stop targeting Meta’s WhatsApp messaging service. – File photo SAN FRANCISCO — Last week, a federal court in Northern California issued an injunction prohibiting the Israeli spyware company NSO Group from targeting and spying on users of WhatsApp, one of the world’s most widely used communication platforms, according to Reuters. However, the ruling by Judge Phyllis Hamilton significantly reduced the damages the Israeli company was ordered to pay Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp — from $167 million to $4 million. The judge said NSO’s conduct did not rise to the level of being “sufficiently egregious” to justify the larger financial penalty set earlier by a jury. In the 25-page decision, Judge Hamilton wrote that the court “concluded that the defendants’ conduct causes irreparable harm and, given there is no dispute over its continuation”, granted Meta’s request for an injunction to halt NSO Group’s spying operations against WhatsApp users. The ruling prevents NSO Group, the spyware manufacturer, from targeting WhatsApp and our users around the world ever again. — Will Cathcart, CEO of WhatsApp The injunction represents a major setback for NSO Group, which for years has faced accusations of facilitating human
