HSJC welcomes NPR’s Cheryl W. Thompson to TROY for M. Stanton Evans Symposium

On Wednesday, April 29, Cheryl W. Thompson, an award-winning journalist and investigative correspondent for National Public Radio’s, headlined this year’s Hall School of Journalism and Communication M. Stanton Evans Symposium on the Troy Campus. Thompson spoke with HSJC students and faculty members about her career, the “power of the pen,” and the need for journalism as a pillar of democracy. Before joining NPR in 2019 Thompson spent over 20 years at The Washington Post as an investigative reporter, writing about law enforcement, political corruption, guns and served as a White House correspondent during Barack Obama’s first term. While working at The Gainesville Sun, Thompson discovered a passion for stories that went beyond the daily news cycle to make a real impact.  “I started examining spending by public officials and holding them accountable,” Thompson said. “These stories resonated with the powers that be in city government, which sometimes led to policy changes or personnel moves. In other words, the stories had impact, and impact is one of those things you hope for with investigative reporting. It may not happen with a story, but you want impact.” During her stint at the Los Angeles Daily News, Thompson reported on the second largest school district in the country

Sveinsson Posts 68 as LSU’s NCAA Championship Run Concludes

June 1, 2026 - 09:19 PM Arni Sveinsson finishes play with a 4-under par 68 by Kent Lowe CARLSBAD, California – Sophomore Arni Sveinsson of LSU posted a 4-under 68 to lead the Tigers in the final round here Monday in the NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championship at the OMNI La Costa Resort and Spa North Course. The Tigers, who advanced to this final round on the basis of a historic team round of 18-under par on Sunday, finished where they started in 12th place at 3-over par 1,155 after a final round on Monday of 1-over par 289. It would take under par to make the final eight teams for match play and that number was 2-under par 1,150 which four teams tied at that score (UCLA, Tennessee, North Carolina and Stanford). There would be a playoff later Monday night to decide the final two teams that would advance to the quarterfinal round of play. Sveinsson, who has battled through injury all spring, opened with birdies on the par 5 10th and par 4 11th hole before posting 12 consecutive pars. He then birdied the par 5 sixth, bogeyed the par 4 seventh and finished with back-to-back birdies

TROY’s Montgomery Metro Alumni Chapter awards three scholarships – Troy Today

Troy University’s Montgomery Metro Alumni Chapter gathered earlier this month to award scholarship to two current TROY students and one incoming student. The chapter awarded $2,000 scholarships current TROY students Jennifer Serna and Samuel Myers and incoming student Maggie Weatherford, a recent graduate of Pike Road High School. An annual golf tournament and silent auction are the chapter’s main fundraising effort to fund scholarships. “Mainly due to our golf tournament each fall and the silent auction we have along with it, we have been able to increase the amount of our scholarships,” said chapter President Bryan Hubbard. “This year we are able to give three scholarships at $2,000 each, and we are very proud of that.” Myers and Weatherford attended the gathering on May 7 at the Wynlakes home of Alumni Director Faith Byrd where they were recognized and awarded the scholarships. “I’m just very grateful to receive this scholarship,” said Weatherford, who will be studying nursing at TROY. “I have an older brother who is already in college, I will be starting my college journey in the fall, and I have a younger brother who will be a freshman after me, so I am so grateful to receive this

Why did the FBI want ‘Dilbert’ creator Scott Adams’ twitter data? – Reason Magazine

FOIA The cartoonist caught the FBI’s attention over a bizarre scheme involving Matt Gaetz, a CIA agent held captive in Iran, and a Florida fraudster. Matthew Petti | 6.1.2026 4:53 PM (Illustration: DAN ROSENSTRAUCH/TNS/Newscom/Rokas Tenys/Dreamstime) Most Americans knew the late Scott Adams for Dilbert , his beloved comic strip about an office worker and his dimwitted colleagues. Later in life, Adams became known as a kind of right-wing shock jockey . But the cartoonist caught the FBI's attention for something a little bit different: the sex crimes investigation into former Rep. Matt Gaetz (R–Fl.) and a bizarre blackmail scheme that grew out of it. The FBI released its files on Adams last week, five months after his death, in response to a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request from Reason . The records include the heavily redacted results of a background check and a request to Twitter—the social media network later renamed X—to preserve Adams' account data, including his private messages. The investigation into Adams seems to have begun in the spring of 2021, when he was entangled in the Gaetz scandal. On March 30, 2021, The New York Times reported that Gaetz was under federal investigation for having sex

Ultimately, one Earth-shattering rematch clearly turned into a trilogy, while Roman Reigns held onto the Ula Fala and his WWE World Heavyweight Championship in a Tribal Combat main event against Jacob Fatu. There was one significant title change on the show, and another feud was clearly extended at least until WWE Night of Champions, if not the two-night WWE SummerSlam coming in early August from Minneapolis, Minnesota. Let's take a look at everything that went down Sunday afternoon at WWE Clash in Italy with a full list of winners, plus results, grades and analysis. WWE Clash in Italy results, grades WWE World Heavyweight Championship -- Roman Reigns (c) vs. Jacob Fatu (Tribal Combat) After a brief trip into the crowd, Reigns got run into the steel steps with the top portion sliding into the ring.

Hoos in No Hurry to Head Home – Virginia Cavaliers Official Athletic Site

By Jeff White (jwhite@virginia.edu)VirginiaSports.com HATTIESBURG, Miss. — Any game now could be his last as a college baseball player. Has that crossed AJ Gracia’s mind? Of course. “It’s pretty hard to ignore that,” the University of Virginia center-fielder said Saturday evening at Southern Mississippi’s Pete Taylor Park. Gracia, a junior, is projected to be an early pick in this summer’s Major League Baseball draft. He spent his freshman and sophomore years at Duke, where he saw older teammates go to great lengths to extend their college careers. They set an example he’s following this postseason as a Cavalier. “I think there’s something to be said about you're kind of looking the end right in the face, playing college baseball, and you don't want it to end,” Gracia said. “I think we've kind of talked the last couple of weeks about just fighting for another day together. So that's kind of where I'm at with that.” After winning the first elimination game of the NCAA tournament’s Hattiesburg Regional, the Wahoos are assured at least one more day together. Second-seeded Virginia (37-22) meets third-seeded Jacksonville State (47-14) on Sunday at 4 p.m. ET. The loser’s season will end. The winner will

Twitter Gold: Grant Hill & Rick Pitino Discuss The 1992 Duke-UK Classic

It’s amazing that the 1992 Duke-Kentucky Elite Eight game is still talked about, but it was a phenomenal contest. Obviously, what people remember is Christian Laettner’s astonishing winning shot. It’s become legend, and rightly so. The whole play was incredible, from Grant Hill’s long, looping pass to Laettner, to his presence of mind to fake left then turn to shoot, and of course, the shot hit nothing but net. People tend to forget that Kentucky’s Sean Woods hit an incredible shot just before Laettner topped him, and that Kentucky thought they had that game in the bag. In this video, Duke legend Grant Hill talks to former Kentucky coach Rick Pitino, who surprisingly says that “that’s not a bad memory,” and that he “treasures that game.” Don’t tell Kentucky fans. He points out that Jamal Mashburn fouled out, and Hill says that he was the reason the game was close, because “Mashburn was kicking my butt.” Hill is a humble guy, but he might have mentioned his brilliant pass. It was high enough that the Kentucky defenders couldn’t reach it, but in a perfect spot for Laettner to catch and deliver. Duke ran almost the same play against Wake Forest
