Hendriks was diagnosed in December of 2022 before undergoing four rounds of chemotherapy and immunotherapy over the span of five months. Hendriks completed his last round of chemotherapy on April 3, quickly returning to the mound for rehab assignments later that month. As expected, the veteran pitcher received an outpouring of support of Twitter after the news broke on Sunday. In comments made on radio network France Info, the minister said that the U.S. company would be banned from the EU if it refused to follow the incoming European Digital Services Act, which goes into effect throughout the EU at the end of August. "Disinformation is one of the gravest threats weighing on our democracies," said Barrot. "Twitter, if it repeatedly doesn't follow our rules, will be banned from the EU," the French minister added. The remarks mark an escalation of an ongoing fight between European politicians and Twitter, which was bought last year by Elon Musk, the controversial billionaire who also controls Tesla and SpaceX. Last week, POLITICO reported that the social media platform was withdrawing from the EU's voluntary disinformation code of practice. The code spells out obligations for large digital platforms on tracking political advertising, clamping down on disinformation, and encouraging wider access and participation to outsiders. Other major social media platforms have pledged to support the rulebook, which is meant to pre-empt some of the

(Credit: Getty Images) LGBT Youth Scotland, a charity for queer young people, has deleted its Twitter account over safety fears due to “increase in extreme views” following Elon Musk’s takeover. Chief executive Dr Mhairi Crawford said that the charity deleted its Twitter account – which had more than 33,000 followers – because it felt this was the “only option” after Musk’s acquisition of the platform in October 2022. “Since Twitter’s takeover in 2022 we have become increasingly concerned by a number of statements and decisions that have had a real impact on the LGBTQ+ community,” Dr Crawford told AberdeenLive. ‘Troubling increase in extreme views’ “Our following on Twitter was the largest across all of our platforms,” Dr Crawford continued. “But we have noticed a troubling increase in extreme views and targeted attacks towards members of the LGBTQ+ community, as well as our own charity directly. “We want to create safe spaces for young people to feel hopeful about the world around them and their own futures and, ultimately, Twitter does not make this possible.” Crawford said she hopes LGBT

Last week, Cuban wrote he did his own deep dive into how Twitter determines who sees what posts. At the core of the issue, Cuban said, is that the site's algorithm highly ranks tweets that your followers interact with. That metric is a good way to see popular posts. But it's very convenient for Musk, who as Cuban points out, is the most followed person on Twitter."The largest Twitter account has the greatest reach," Cuban wrote. "So who @elonmusk engages with on Twitter has an ENORMOUS impact on what an indeterminable number of people see in their For You Timelines."Those algorithms are more influential than before because of Twitter's new "For You" timeline, Cuban said. Formerly, the platform allowed users to choose how often they saw tweets from people they didn't follow. Now, when users open the site, they automatically see a "For You" timeline, which is comprised of "50% in network and 50% out of network" posts, according to Twitter. There's still a feed that only shows tweets from accounts you personally follow

REUTERS / Marco Bello As Twitter limits access to a tool to analyse conversations on the platform, researchers will be deprived of information that sheds light on political hate speech and incitement to violence. That will have real-world implications for tracking election meddling, disinformation campaigns and human rights abuses. The fight to counter disinformation just got tougher. In April, Twitter limited access to its “application programming interface” or API, a computer protocol that enables application software to communicate efficiently and accurately. Since Twitter was founded in 2006, its free API policy has allowed millions of users to extract data from the platform. Access to its massive public data sets allowed open-source intelligence researchers to share the information and analyse the influence of social media on politics, including its role in election meddling; harassment campaigns against opposition figures and civil society activists; and the incitement to violence and stoking conflict. The new access restrictions, if they stand, could obscure these critical insights into social media’s influence. After seventeen years of free access to millions of tweets per

They would still have legal obligations," the official said, referring to landmark tech rules adopted recently to which the code of practice is linked."They are not pulling out of Europe," the official said.Twitter did not respond immediately to a request for comment.Violations of the tech rules can cost companies fines as much as 6% of their global turnover.Companies signed up to the code include Alphabet's (GOOGL.O) Google, Meta

Ron DeSantis' flubbed Twitter rollout. | Tom Beaumont/AP Photo SIOUX CITY, Iowa — Ron DeSantis’ campaign announcement was exploding on the launch pad, but in a sweaty warehouse of an old machine supply company in western Iowa late Wednesday night, it was hard to find anyone among some 300 voters gathered for a Tim Scott town hall who knew it happened. Let alone cared or thought it would alter the race. Not Clinton Vos, a 63-year-old agricultural sales professional who wore a cowboy hat and milled around before the town hall began — just as official Washington was still gawking at the Twitter app crashing several times amid DeSantis’ highly anticipated campaign launch. “I knew that it was going to happen today on Twitter,” he acknowledged, “but I’m not a Twitter follower.” Not Curtis Kull, a 30-year-old behavioral health professional who showed up with his girlfriend around 6 p.m. to hear Scott speak. “I did not,” he said, when asked whether he had heard the news. And not Scott Bowman, a 65-year-old UPS union steward who voted for

Ron DeSantis has officially launched his 2024 presidential campaign, though not without hiccups. His planned Twitter Spaces conversation, scheduled for 6 p.m. ET on Wednesday, saw multiple technical issues that delayed his announcement by more than 20 minutes, as the platform kept crashing. Twitter owner Elon Musk, who was hosting the conversation, blamed the technical difficulties on servers not having sufficient bandwidth for the hundreds of thousands of people who were tuning in.After launching a second Spaces from the Twitter account of entrepreneur David Sacks, Musk apologized and said, "I think we're definitely breaking new ground here. As far as I know. No major presidential candidate has ever announced their candidacy on social media this way, certainly in a Twitter Space. So thank you for doing that." DeSantis said he chose to announce via the social media platform because of his distrust of the media after its coverage of his response to the COVID-19 pandemic. He then praised Musk for purchasing the social media company."I
