Spoiler alert: Twitter is testing status updates again – Mashable

Remember Twitter statuses? The company has experimented with some variant of the feature several times, last time in 2019 when it announced a test, which never resulted in a wide release. The status feature will be familiar to Facebook users, who have the ability to set a "status" to give additional context to their posts. And just like Facebook's version, the latest iteration of the Twitter status only lets you set a status from a predetermined, finite list of statuses. Tweet may have been deleted (opens in a new tab) Some of the statuses on offer are "spoiler alert," "AMA," "hot take," "vacation mode," "unpopular opinion," "soon," "working hard, hardly working," and "shower thoughts." Given that Twitter users often do use emoji and certain phrases to mark the type of post they've written (the most common example of this is probably the "thread" emoji), the feature will probably see some use. Note that, in its previous iteration, users were able to set anything as status, and now they're limited to 20 or so options. The statuses are clickable, and if you click one, you'll get a list of other public tweets which used the same status or phrase.“For a limited…

As Twitter rethinks its San Francisco footprint, a bigger $9 billion question hangs … – MarketWatch

Twitter Inc. put its large San Francisco office footprint on review for downsizing, and has nixed the opening of an office in Oakland, Calif., a person with direct knowledge of the matter said. The move clouds the future of the social-media site’s stylish San Francisco headquarters, a 1.1 million-square-foot trophy office complex at 1355 Market Street, where Twitter TWTR, +1.93% occupies about 75% of the space, according to Trepp data. Cutbacks by technology giants could result in painful ramifications for San Francisco, a city with a skyline and culture dramatically reshaped in recent decades by a tech boom on its home turf, but also by staggering inequality and a homelessness crisis made worse by the pandemic. Twitter said in a statement Wednesday it was “evaluating our global office portfolio and resizing certain locations based on utilization,” but also that its decision doesn’t “impact our current head count or employee roles.” Offices in Seoul; Wellington, New Zealand; Osaka; Madrid; Hamburg; Sydney; and Utrecht, Netherlands, were put under review for closure when leases expire, a person with knowledge of the matter said. The plan would be to resize offices in Tokyo, Mumbai, New Delhi, Dublin, New York and San Francisco, but scrap plans…

Tweet this: Twitter sets date for shareholders to vote on Elon Musk deal | WRAL TechWire

by Clare Duffy, CNN Business — July 27, 2022 . By Clare Duffy, CNN Business Twitter has set a date for its shareholders to vote to approve its $44 billion acquisition deal by Elon Musk, despite the company’s ongoing legal battle with the billionaire Tesla CEO over the deal. The company on Tuesday sent shareholders a letter saying it would hold a virtual special meeting on September 13 to vote on the merger agreement, according to a regulatory filing. Twiiter grows number of users but sees revenue slips, losses hit $270M The announcement comes as the legal fight between Twitter and Musk over the deal revs up. Musk earlier this month moved to terminate his agreement to buy Twitter, accusing the company of breaching the deal by making misleading statements about the number of bot accounts on its platform and withholding information that he claims could help him evaluate the issue. Days later, Twitter filed a lawsuit against the billionaire, asking a court to compel him to follow through with the deal. A judge last week ruled that the case should go to a five-day trial in October. The Musk suit aside, the shareholder vote is one of the few remaining official steps needed to…

Connecting our projects to the Internet just got a lot easier, and cheaper! The $6 Raspberry Pi Pico W, an upgrade on the original Raspberry Pi Pico, brought one great update: Wi-Fi. This upgrade, along with the $6 price, enables makers to harness the power of the RP2040 SoC for a plethora of Internet of Things applications. The Pico W also tops the list of our best RP2040 boards. We’ve already covered how to pass data to and from a Raspberry Pi Pico W to another web service, Anvil. But what if you just want to collect some data and send it off into the world? There are many ways to do this, but the simplest has to be IFTTT. (Image credit: Tom's Hardware)IFTTT (If This Then That) is a web service that can take data from many different inputs (Twitter, Home Automation, Google, Facebook etc) and send it to other services. In this project we’ll use the most basic service, webhooks, to send an HTTP POST request from a Raspberry Pi Pico W to IFTTT’s service. On IFTTT we will create an applet that will intercept the webhook, and trigger a tweet to be sent on Twitter. For this project you will needRaspberry…
