Twitter sues Texas AG to stop “retaliatory” content-moderation probe

reprisal — Texas targeted Twitter because of protected content moderation, suit claims. Kate Cox - Mar 10, 2021 10:20 pm UTC Twitter is suing Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, alleging that a probe Paxton launched into its business is an act of retaliation against the platform's choice to ban the account of former US President Donald Trump. The suit (PDF) accuses Paxton of using his office to "intimidate, harass, and target Twitter in retaliation for Twitter's exercise of its First Amendment rights." The conflict all goes back to the January 6 events at the US Capitol. At the height of the chaos, while a mob was actively storming the building, Trump took to Twitter to reiterate his false claims of electoral fraud and seemingly egg on the violence. In the following hours, Twitter deleted three tweets and suspended Trump's account for 12 hours. Less than a day after that 12-hour suspension expired, Trump was back on the platform, again seeming to encourage the insurrectionists. Twitter interpreted the new posts as further calls to violence, which are against the platform's terms of service, and permanently banned Trump's account. Twitter was far from alone: Twitch, Snapchat, and Facebook (including Instagram) also all…

Texas AG says probe to continue despite Twitter lawsuit

by: JAKE BLEIBERG, Associated Press Posted: Mar 10, 2021 / 05:26 PM EST / Updated: Mar 10, 2021 / 05:26 PM EST Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton speaks at the Austin Police Association on Thursday Sept. 10, 2020. Twitter has filed a lawsuit against the Texas Attorney General. The social media company claims the Republican used his office to retaliate against it for banning the account of former President Donald Trump following the riot at the U.S. Capitol last year. Days after the deadly riot, Paxton announced an investigation into Twitter and four other major technology companies for what he called “the seemingly coordinated de-platforming of the president.” Twitter responded Monday, March 8, 2021 with a federal lawsuit claiming Paxton is seeking to punish it for taking Trump’s account offline. (Jay Janner/Austin American-Statesman via AP) DALLAS (AP) — Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton said Wednesday that a lawsuit by Twitter won’t deter his office from investigating the content moderation practices of the social media giant and four other major technology companies. Twitter sued the Republican official this week in an effort to halt his probe, which the company claimed was retaliation for banning the account of former President Donald Trump…

twitter-is-working-on-a-'big-overhaul'-of-tweetdeck

Twitter is working on a 'big overhaul' of TweetDeck

Twitter is actively working on a “big overhaul” of its TweetDeck platform, which lets you arrange lists and feeds into easy-to-read vertical rows, and it plans to share more about the project publicly later this year, product chief Kayvon Beykpour said in an interview with The Verge published Tuesday. TweetDeck, as one of the oldest and originally third-party account management apps for the platform, hasn’t seen much in the way of design or major feature changes in years. The app launched 12 years ago and was acquired by Twitter in 2011, and it’s more or less still the same vertical grid viewer for your various Twitter feeds it started as. Mostly, Twitter has ported over new functions added to its main website and mobile apps while keeping the core TweetDeck design relatively static. That appears to be changing. Beykpour and the product team recognize they haven’t “given TweetDeck a lot of love recently,” and they’re actively working on a new TweetDeck they plan to show off later this year. It’s part of a broader push to improve Twitter’s developer tools and repair its relationship with app makers, with the latter being a longtime contention between Twitter and the broader software…

Dr. Date: What do I do about my boyfriend's horny Twitter personality?

Dear Dr. Date, I’ve been in a relationship with this guy for two months. He keeps tweeting memes after we have sex, which makes me really uncomfortable because I keep that part of my life private (besides the occasional Dr. Date letter, of course). I can see all of his liked tweets — all of which are horny, unhinged tweets from cute e-girls. I hate comparing myself to other girls because I think I’m a catch, but if I want to keep him around, he needs to log off. And if he doesn’t, I will.  What do I do?  Signed,  It’s the horny tweets for me Dear it’s the horny tweets for me, Your man shouldn’t be making the private public without your consent. This warrants a long conversation. Remind him that you aren’t having sex with his Twitter followers and that if they are really interested in the ins and outs of your relationship, they can date you once you and this dude inevitably call it quits.  Either unfollow your boyfriend so you can’t see the tweets, or find someone who will keep that part of their life private. If he is comfortable tweeting about his experiences with you,…

'Cry me a river' : Bethenny Frankel faces backlash after criticising Meghan Markle on Twitter

Real Housewives star Bethenny Frankel faced a social media backlash after slamming Meghan Markle hours before her tell-all Oprah interview.Frankel took to Twitter to bash the Duchess of Sussex and tell her 1.5 million followers that she has no sympathy for Ms Markle’s complaints.“Cry me a river ... the plight of being a game show host, fairly unknown actress, to suffering in a palace, w tiaras & 7 figure weddings for TWO WHOLE YEARS to being a household name w @Oprah on speed dial, fetching 7 m for interviews, hundreds of millions in media deals,” wrote Frankel over a collage of headlines about Meghan.“I 100 give Harry a break.  This isn’t the way to generate less press & cannot be filed under the guise of wanting privacy to prevent a repeat of previous events,” she added.“If you hate me for saying it here don’t listen to my podcast #justbwithbethenny it’s littered with my opinion.”In a bizarre coincidence, the reality TV star once dated Meghan’s ex-husband, Trevor Engelson, after they divorced, before going into business with the California film producer.Meghan and Mr Engelson began dating in 2004, and were married from 2011 until 2013.Thanks for signing up to the News newsletter{{#verifyErrors}} {{message}}…

The Twitter world reacts to Wisconsin basketball's controversial loss to Iowa

One of the unfortunate storylines of Wisconsin basketball’s 2020-21 season has become the Bo Boroski—Brad Davison saga. Boroski has officiated Big Ten basketball for some time, though his recent relationship with Wisconsin basketball and Davison has taken some shine away from the product on the court. As a referee, the last thing you want is for everybody watching to know your name. During Wisconsin’s hard-fought loss to Iowa earlier today, his fame was on full display. Related: Wisconsin basketball is now locked in to its Big Ten tournament seed There were countless replay reviews, a questionable flagrant foul on Davison, Iowa being handed possession and more. Here are some of the best Twitter reaction from the Badgers’ loss to Iowa, otherwise known as the stripes show. Wisconsin-Iowa is conclusive proof that replay review is out of control. Change is required. — Jay Bilas (@JayBilas) March 7, 2021 To the officials working today's game between Wisconsin and Iowa: Congratulations. You've successfully ruined a heck of a college basketball game. Sincerely, America — Jon Rothstein (@JonRothstein) March 7, 2021 The final minute of Wisconsin/Iowa took 20 minutes. — Ken Pomeroy (@kenpomeroy) March 7, 2021 This Iowa-Wisconsin game was incredible until the officials decided…

kayleigh-mcenany-said-trump-finds-it-'kind-of-freeing'-to-be-off-twitter-since-he-was-banned

Kayleigh McEnany said Trump finds it 'kind of freeing' to be off Twitter since he was banned

When Donald Trump got banned from Twitter, he went "ballistic," according to a Politico report. But now, two months later, he finds it "kind of freeing," former press aide Kayleigh McEnany said. At the time of his ban in January, Trump tried tweeting from other White House–affiliated accounts and threatened to establish his own social media platform. Visit the Business section of Insider for more stories. Ex-White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany on Friday said former President Donald Trump is "doing just fine" without Twitter, a stark contrast to his behavior after initially learning he was banned.Trump was banned from Twitter in January because of his potential to incite further violence following the deadly siege on the US Capitol, the platform said. At the time, the former president was infuriated by the move. A senior administration official told Politico that Trump went "ballistic."Trump even tried to tweet from different avenues. Shortly after Twitter removed his @realDonaldTrump account, the president tweeted from the official @POTUS and @TeamTrump handles. But Twitter immediately deleted those posts as well. One of his now-deleted tweets said the former president had begun "negotiating with various other sites" and hinted at a big announcement. His team would "look at the…

WATCH: Mathew Barzal sets hockey Twitter ablaze with between-the-legs goal

2 hours ago Mathew Barzal just made his case for Goal of the Year. The Islanders center dropped jaws with a highlight-reel goal on Saturday afternoon against the Sabres, going between the legs for a shot that beat Buffalo goalie Carter Hutton to tie the game and send hockey twitter into a frenzy. The former first-round pick shook off a defender in the attacking zone after winning a race for the loose puck, skated between the circles and faked a backhand shot attempt before dragging the puck, and his stick, between his legs and tucking a shot inside the right post for an improbable goal. It was Barzal’s ninth goal on the season, but certainly the most memorable.
