Why Social Audio Blew Up. And Why Clubhouse And Twitter Spaces Will Spawn 'Thousands Of …

A woman enjoying some audio. Perhaps social audio, such as Clubhouse, or perhaps just music. Photo by Blaz Erzetic on Unsplash Social audio is probably the hottest startup space right now. Just ask anyone begging for a Clubhouse invite. But why? The answer, according to analyst Jeremiah Owyang, is that audio is the ‘Goldilocks medium:’ not too much, not too little, but just right. “What we found is during the quarantine is that text messaging just doesn’t give us the emotion and the nuance that the human condition requires, especially during isolation,” Owyang told me recently on the TechFirst podcast. “On the flip side — aside from this amazing show — Zoom calls and video shows are just too taxing on people.” We’ve all been on the Zoom call where we’re mostly looking at our own faces, just to ensure that veggies from lunch aren’t still between our teeth. And we’ve also been on Twitter doom-scrolling thousands of tweets wondering why we followed all the people we did. Social audio, led by front-runner startup Clubhouse, is the happy medium, says Owyang. “You come as you are,” Owyang says. “You don’t have to be wearing your business suit. You don’t have…

Badgers fans on Twitter managing expectations as Wisconsin lands North Carolina to open NCAA tournament Here's what fans are saying as the Badgers prepare to face the Tar Heels in the tournament for the first time since 2015: Could've been worse When a team like BYU Gets a six seed, seems a little bit low to me. I know that North Carolina is a very Beatable team. Marquette absolutely abused them. I like Wisconsin over UNC. — Jack Anthony (@jamchese) March 14, 2021 Fair enough Haven’t really beaten a good team all year. — EP In Katy (@EP2KP2) March 14, 2021 Window's open Carolina is frantic/messy so have to hope UW hits 3s and takes advantage of tournovers. UNC athleticism advantage will probably be too much to overcome. — Mark Wolfgram (@markwwolfgram) March 14, 2021 Not their finest moment Two once storied programs having less than stellar years — chris c (@ccnice1) March 14, 2021 Identity crisis Interesting and depends on which Badgers team shows up, either the one that comes out hungry and ready to play or the one that looks overwhelmed. — Matt Hasheider (@Oddcase) March 14, 2021 Not the time nor the place Way too rational —…

#Stimmy Twitter dreams big with stimulus check direct deposit memes

This weekend brought good news to people across the country in the form of $1,400 direct deposits, sending the rest of us racing to our bank accounts to monitor for signs of life. And what could herald the arrival of stimulus checks better than some A+ stimmy tweets? In a time otherwise burdened by unemployment, eviction and great financial hardship, the tweets emphasized delightful fantasies of big spending. They coalesced around a particular form, offering up some truly top-flight requests. Here’s one example from @GayvidDowdle:“Direct deposit: $1400Me, in burger king: I’d like to speak to the king.”@jamieingreenbay took a cue from Ron Swanson in “Parks and Recreation”:“Direct Deposit: $1400Me: Give me all the bacon and eggs you have.”@charliedayz went with Stanley Hudson from “The Office,” from a scene where Hudson asks a waiter for a side of lobster with his surf ‘n turf order. The waiter notes that the meal already comes with lobster.“Not enough lobster,” Hudson says. “Side order.”Some tweets mused that stimulus recipients would leave their dental needs unmet and bills unpaid so they could live a little. After all, it has been 12 months of ... pandemic. Why not buy out the whole store ... or its calling card? How did…

Lane Kiffin trolls Alabama football, Nick Saban on Twitter with new license plate

Mikey DiLullo  |  The Tuscaloosa News Former Alabama offensive coordinator and Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin is at it again. He poked fun at Nick Saban and Alabama football on Twitter on Saturday.Kiffin posted a picture of a custom auto license plate that spells out out "THX NS" – apparently short for "Thanks Nick Saban." Kiffin called out Alabama football for a rematch of last season's game in Oxford in the tweet.Kiffin previously served as Alabama's offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach under Saban from 2014 to 2016. He took over as the Ole Miss head coach prior to the 2020 season, where he went 5-5 with a win in the Outback Bowl. After his time at Alabama, Kiffin served as the head coach at Florida Atlantic from 2017 to 2019, compiling a 26-13 record and two 10-win seasons in three years in Boca Raton. In 2020, Kiffin's Rebels lost to Saban's Crimson Tide on Oct. 10 in a 63-48 offensive shootout, with the teams combining for more than 1,300 yards of total offense.

BloombergU.S. Debt Rout Ignites Hunt for New Havens That Ends in China(Bloomberg) -- An upstart contender to U.S. Treasuries has emerged in the wake of last month’s vicious debt rout.Chinese government bonds have defied the turbulence rocking peers from Australia to Europe, offering a port in the global reflation storm. JPMorgan Asset Management and Brandywine Global Investment Management LLC are among those who now see them mimicking the resilience that has afforded U.S. government debt the status of the world’s safest asset in times of crisis. The nation’s 10-year yield has been wedged in a tight eight basis-point range over the past month, even as price swings in the rest of the bond world have broken out. While that doesn’t automatically make Chinese bonds the go-to bulwark against volatility, it helps explain why a market once closed to most international investors is emerging as a shock absorber in wild pandemic trading.“At times when you’re seeing volatility in the developed markets like you’re seeing now, it’s a good place to keep your cash,” said Arjun Vij, who co-manages JPMorgan Asset Management’s $1.6 billion Global Bond Fund. “China government bonds are as good an asset as U.S. Treasuries when looking at long-term correlations…

Byeong Hun An roasts himself on Twitter after making an 11 on 17th hole at Players Championship

The first round of the Players Championship has been a very wet one already as we’ve seen a ton of tee shots on the legendary par-3 17th hole land in the water. We told you earlier about Kevn Na’s disaster of a time on that hole in which he chipped in for an 8 after hitting three shots in the water. He later withdrew from the tournament with a back injury.Well, a little later in the day Byeong Hun An walked over to the 17 tee and made Na’s 8 look like nothing. An hit four balls in the water and ended up with an 11, which is the second-highest score to ever be recorded on the island hole (during the Players Championship, I’m sure amateurs who have played the course have fared worse). An had the perfect tweet after his round, though, as he was able to make fun of himself a bit.Players Championship: Leaderboard | PhotosAn then made double-bogey on the 18th hole, meaning he needed 17 strokes to play the final two holes. He finished his round at 11 over.

Someone Totally Ruined the Memory of PalmOS By Putting Twitter on It

PalmOS devices may look incredibly antiquated now, but the PalmPilot and Handspring Visor had one major advantage over modern smartphones: They didn’t have a Twitter app. Unfortunately, Jorge Cohen has just changed that with a PalmOS Twitter app that brings doomscrolling to these 24-year-old devices. The original PalmPilot was released by U.S. Robotics in March of 1997, nine years before Twitter revolutionized how we share opinions online and terrorize those that disagree with them. The PalmPilot and other PDAs that would would follow in its footsteps, including the Handspring Visor, were primarily designed as productivity tools, making schedules and email available while you were away from your computer, even before the BlackBerry hit the scene to stretch the work day well past quitting time.Cohen’s PalmOS Twitter app comes decades after most of us tossed our PalmOS devices in a drawer to be forgotten, but while it’s a work in progress, even the version they demonstrated on Twitter yesterday looks better than what we’re currently stuck with on iOS and Android. As Cohen later explains, their PalmOS Twitter app currently lacks the ability to like tweets, or even the ability to post new tweets, which actually sounds like a solid upgrade. It also…
