It said these parameters could be broadened over time, but acknowledged it wanted to cut the number of verified accounts. Prosecutors on Thursday demanded the death penalty for a man dubbed Japan's "Twitter killer" after he was indicted over the 2017 serial murder of nine people who had posted suicidal thoughts on social media, a high-profile case that shocked the nation. In a lay judge trial at the Tachikawa branch of the Tokyo District Court, prosecutors sought the death penalty for Takahiro Shiraishi, 30, who pleaded guilty to murdering, dismembering and storing the bodies of the nine in his apartment near Tokyo. The program was paused in 2017 after Twitter granted the verified blue check-mark to one of the organizers of the white supremacist Charlottesville rally, sparking outrage. Twitter has now proposed a set of new policies for the program, which include the possibility that accounts have their blue check-marks taken away if they repeatedly break Twitter's rules. This means President Donald Trump, who will in January lose his "world leader" protections for rule violations in January, could be in danger of losing his verified status if he continues to tweet the way he has done in the past.
