Frictionless Shopping Is Here. YouTube and Instagram Join TikTok With New Social …

If you haven't brought your retail business into the world of social commerce just yet, consider this your cue. This month, both Instagram and YouTube unveiled new tools that aim to help users make sales directly on their social media platforms -- removing the need to shop at a brand's own website or retailer's online store. With the more seamless check-out options, presumably consumers will have fewer barriers to buy, and that can lead to more sales. On Instagram, customers can now place and track orders in direct messages, and sellers can request and receive payment in the same thread using Meta Pay. This feature aims to simplify the purchase process, especially for custom orders that might require back-and-forth communication between buyer and seller, according to Meta, the Menlo Park, California-based owner of Instagram and Facebook. Previously, businesses could sell items on Instagram through the app's shop function, but shoppers could not place orders through direct messages. Businesses must have an Instagram storefront to use the new tool. Through a new partnership with Shopify, YouTube creators can now directly link their products across their channels and content, including in livestream videos. U.S.-based users of the feature can enable onsite checkout, which can allow shoppers to make purchases directly on YouTube. To…

Federal Indictment Alleges “YouTube Thieves” Scammed Music Artists Out of More Than $20 Million

Music mogul Webster Batista and his business partner Jose Chenel Teran had it all: expensive cars, flashy jewelry, properties in Miami and Arizona, and a media company worth millions of dollars. What they didn't have was any legal right to the 50,000-plus songs they claimed to own over the past four years, in an alleged scam that cost real artists and content creators more than $20 million. Federal authorities arrested Batista, who also goes by the pseudonyms Eniel Gaetan Hernandez and Yenddi, in the Miami suburb of Doral on November 18 on charges of wire fraud, money laundering, aggravated identity theft, and conspiracy. He posted $150,000 in bail plus a $100,000 bond cosigned by his mother and was ordered by a federal judge to remove himself to Phoenix, Arizona, earlier this month, where he awaits trial in January alongside Teran, his alleged co-conspirator. New Times attempted to contact Miami attorney David Garvin, who represented Batista in a related case in Florida's Southern District Court, but he did not respond to requests for comment via phone or email on Monday. Teran's attorney, Jason Mark Silver of Scottsdale, Arizona, likewise did not respond to requests for comment. Through their Arizona-based business, MediaMuv, LLC, along with…
