Read moreDetailsYouTube stands at a unique intersection between viewers, brands and creators - where viewers look to engaging and knowledgeable creators they trust for entertainment and information. According to a study we ran in partnership with Publicis and TalkShoppe, 89% of viewers agree that YouTube creators give recommendations they can trust. And it is this special, trusted relationship that unlocks new opportunities for creators. After all, today’s consumers want to see new approaches to brand storytelling, and who better to tell those stories than YouTube creators? This is why we’re investing heavily in Shopping, which has incredible potential in the creator economy. There’s already a lot of shopping activity on YouTube, from researching and comparing products to watching creators spotlight a product they love. And the same Publicis and TalkShoppe study found that 87% say when they’re shopping or browsing on YouTube, they feel like they get the highest quality information about products. So we’re working to make it easier to take action on a product you see in a video. One way we’re doing this is through our new partnership with Spotify this week, which gives eligible creators access to live shopping tools. In my latest video, I answer some of your more…

People who watch the news don’t watch me.” A recent college graduate with an oversized thrift store suit and curls like Napoleon Dynamite, Andrew Callaghan doesn’t necessarily look like a credible source of information. But Channel 5 News, Callaghan’s web series and brand, has built a following including 1.93 million YouTube subscribers, and the 25-year-old pulls in roughly $100,000 per month through Patreon. “I think I provide a gateway to engagement with reporting for people who don’t watch the news,” Callaghan, 25, told me. “People who don’t watch the news watch me. People who watch the news don’t watch me.” Since hitting the road in 2019, Callaghan’s work has evolved beyond a parodic presentation of small-town news. He recently reported from Ukraine, interviewing the mayor of Lviv and refugees in the country and across the border in Poland. Much of the money that Channel 5 brings in is spent on operating costs for the traveling production, and the rest is split evenly between Callaghan and two collaborators. During his college years in New Orleans, Callaghan started hitchhiking the American South between classes. When local filmmaker Michael Moises started…

Read moreDetailsUnder a new partnership, creators can display Shopify-listed products across their YouTube channels. Illustration by Rafael Henrique/SOPA Images/LightRocket via GI YouTube creators and merchants will now have the ability to link their Shopify stores to their YouTube channels via a newly announced partnership between the two platforms. Revealed Tuesday (July 19) in a blog post by YouTube VP of Shopping Product David Katz, the partnership will allow creators to display their Shopify-listed products across their YouTube channels while benefitting from Shopify’s real-time inventory syncing “so that viewers are never disappointed to find a product out of stock,” Katz wrote. Additionally, creators can enable checkout directly from YouTube so users can purchase items without ever leaving the platform. “Shopify is the commerce infrastructure of the internet, powering millions of independent businesses all over the world,” said Shopify VP of Product Kaz Nejatian in a statement. “We believe creators are the next generation of merchants, and YouTube has been a long-time leader in powering this new cohort of entrepreneurs. We’re excited to partner with YouTube, and help scale the creator economy into its next phase of growth.” YouTube is just the latest streaming platform to integrate with Shopify, following previously-announced partnerships with…
Read moreDetailsOne of the major visual changes in Android 13 is a redesign of media controls, and YouTube Music has just been updated to support the new style. Apps need to target API level 33 to take advantage of the new design. Otherwise, all controls appear at the very bottom of the taller player for a very cramped experience that complicates tapping. YouTube Music 5.16 targets Android 13 and gets a rounded square pause button at the right, while the play action is housed in a circle with transition animation between those states. The squiggly progress bar is flanked by back/forward, with repeat and shuffle in the corner. YouTube Music joins Chrome and Google Podcasts (which is updated via the Google app) in being fully compatible with the new media player. Spotify has yet to be updated, and will hopefully get a refresh before the Android 13 launch on Pixel in the coming weeks. The main YouTube app (for background audio playback) also lacks it. That said, Google in Android 13 Beta 1 enabled the new design for all apps. It remains to be seen whether Google will require developers to update or automatically enable it to deliver a modern experience…
Read moreDetailsYouTube is making it that much easier to buy on impulse from your favorite channel. The internet giant now lets creators link their Shopify stores, making it easier to snag merch. You'll know if a product is in stock, and you won't even have to leave a video to check out if a YouTuber is based in the US. If there's a must-have hoodie or yoga mat, you can order it moments after you see it. You'll see the enhanced shopping from eligible creators — that is, they need to have at least 10,000 subscribers (or an official artist channel), monetization, a focus on non-child content and a largely spotless policy violation record. You can't launch your YouTube channel and store at the same time, then. YouTube told Engadget it won't take a cut of Shopify-linked sales. Even so, the company is clearly hoping that the seamless experience will encourage you to shop through video pages. That, in turn, might spur creators to build up a large-enough audience that they can share a storefront and boost their bottom line. This might also help YouTube fend off competition from Instagram and others that already help you shop through social media posts. All…
