Kiprotich turns to YouTube in preparations for Mauritius – The Star

The 2016 African Championship javelin silver medalist Alexander Kiprotich says he is relying a lot on videos from the internet to sharpen himself ahead of the Senior Africa Athletics Championships in Mauritius. Kiprotich said his training took a huge hit from the coronavirus pandemic and subsequently, has been training alone. "If I could receive scholarship, that would aid me a lot in my training.  I've been training by myself for a while now... sometimes using videos from the internet. The African championship is my first-ever international appearance since 2019 so I want to do well," he said. Kiprotich added that the African showpiece is part of a larger dream of competing at the World Championships in Oregon in July. "When I go there, I will try to qualify for the World Championships because there is that opportunity. The good thing is that the weather in Mauritius is warm, which is very conducive for javelin. Hopefully, I can improve in my training and get there in top shape, technique and coordination," he said. However, the 2013 African Junior champion concedes he will be under pressure to perform on his first international competition in three years. "The pressure is certainly there because I have been away for a…

Texas has declared open season on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube with censorship law – CNN

(CNN)Texas residents can now sue Facebook, Twitter and YouTube for allegedly censoring their content after a federal appeals court sided Wednesday with the state's law restricting how social media sites can moderate their platforms. The 15-word ruling allowing the law, which had been blocked last year, to take effect has significant potential consequences. Most immediately, it creates new legal risks for the tech giants, and opens them up to a possible wave of litigation that legal experts say would be costly and difficult to defend.Texas's law makes it illegal for any social media platform with 50 million or more US monthly users to "block, ban, remove, deplatform, demonetize, de-boost, restrict, deny equal access or visibility to, or otherwise discriminate against expression." The law creates enormous uncertainty about how social media will actually function in Texas, according to legal experts, and raises questions about what users' online spaces may look like and what content they may find there, if the companies are even able to run their services at all. The ruling also sets the stage for what could be a Supreme Court showdown over First Amendment rights and, possibly, a dramatic reinterpretation of those rights that affects not just the…

Texas law inspired by Trump bans to take effect against Facebook, Twitter and YouTube – USA Today

A federal appeals court ruling has cleared the way for a controversial Texas law that will allow any state resident banned from social media platforms for their political views to sue. The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Wednesday put on hold a temporary injunction that a federal judge issued in December. The law will take effect while judges weigh an appeal to the lower court decision. Two trade groups representing Facebook parent Meta Platforms, Alphabet's Google and Twitter have sued Texas over the law which was motivated by the social media suspensions of former President Donald Trump after the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol and the prevailing belief among some conservatives that the companies censor right-wing views.Anti-conservative bias?: Do Facebook and Google censor conservatives? YouTube videos of Ben Roberts-Smith trial cut after sensitive information exposed – ABC News

The Federal Court will no longer upload regular YouTube videos of the high-profile defamation case of war veteran Ben Roberts-Smith, after "persons outside Australia" used them to publish information identifying sensitive witnesses.Key points:The lengthy trial has regularly heard sensitive evidence from de-identified witnessesPeople who are physically in Sydney can still watch proceedings Nine opposed the move, highlighting the importance of open justiceMr Roberts-Smith is suing The Sydney Morning Herald, The Age and The Canberra Times newspapers over a series of 2018 stories which, he claims, contained false allegations of unlawful killings, bullying and domestic violence. Much of the trial has involved hearing from former and current Special Air Service Regiment (SAS) soldiers, whose identities cannot be revealed for national security reasons. In an effort to accommodate open justice while COVID-19 restrictions reduced the capacity of courtrooms, videos showing a limited view of the court during appearances of such "sensitive witnesses" have been published to YouTube on a delayed basis. This allowed for the editing out of any so-called "inadvertent disclosure" of sensitive information — which has occasionally occurred, usually by soldier witnesses who are required to use pseudonyms when referring to most other witnesses — from a live feed provided to journalists and streamed into another…
