Why is the Disney vs YouTube TV standoff going so long? – Awful Announcing

Credit: Jeffrey Becker-Imagn Images Why has the Disney, nee ESPN, standoff with YouTube TV gone on so long, now around two weeks, with ominous comments from the Mouse’s CFO today suggesting the blackout could go longer (writing this almost surely means the sides will settle shortly!). This is already one of the longest blackouts stemming from a contract dispute between a pay TV distributor –YouTube TV – and a content company, Disney. There are a few reasons why YouTube TV subscribers have been shut out from watching Monday Night Football and SEC football–not to mention the local ABC affiliate and even National Geographic channel. Obviously money is the primary concern, but there are others too. First off, YouTube TV is a division of Alphabet, the corporate name for Google.  While YouTube TV with its 10 million subs may be a big deal in the pay TV business, it is not the major money center for Google, not by a longshot. This is not to say YouTube TV is playing hardball because of this, but the pressing need for a deal may be a little different than for those pay TV distributors whose primary business is just that. “There’s a real

Latest Twist in YouTube TV-Disney Dispute Takes Heat Off ESPN – Newsweek

The carriage fight between Google’s YouTube TV and Disney has moved into a new phase. For over a week, ABC and ESPN have remained off YouTube TV for nearly 10 million subscribers, with analysts estimating Disney’s losses at $4.3 million per day—around $30 million weekly—as negotiations drag on ahead of Thursday’s quarterly earnings call. A notable development emerged on Wednesday, however, with Awful Announcing reporting that YouTube TV and Disney are aligned on the price for ESPN, widely regarded as the primary sticking point, but that the real issue now is ABC’s price and carriage terms. In recent years, Disney has shifted more live sports, once exclusive to ESPN, onto ABC, most notably "Monday Night Football." Disney argues the expanded sports slate warrants higher distributor fees, but operators push back, saying they’re being billed twice for the same content since they already pay premium rates for ESPN. The report notes YouTube TV isn’t seeking immediate discounts, but instead wants contractual assurances of lower rates once it overtakes three rival distributors in subscribers, a move that could compel Disney to adjust pricing industry-wide. The final hurdle in YouTube TV-Disney dispute – New York Post

YouTube TV and Disney could be nearing an agreement that restores ESPN to the platform’s subscribers — but they’re not over the finish line quite yet, and one key hurdle remains in breaking the streaming stalemate.  According to a Wednesday report from The Athletic, the media superpowers remain at odds regarding the cost for Disney’s “ancillary non-sports networks,” such as Freeform, FX and National Geographic.  Disney-owned networks, including ESPN and ABC, were pulled from YouTube TV amid a carriage dispute on Oct. 30, rendering “Monday Night Football” and marquee college football matchups unavailable to 10 million subscribers.  YouTube TV and Disney could be nearing an agreement that restores ESPN to the platform’s subscribers, but one hurdle remains. Getty Images YouTube TV offered a $20 credit to subscribers last week as customers missed a second weekend of college football and “MNF.”  “Google and Disney need to get a deal done and end this blackout,” FCC Chair Brendan Carr posted to his X account on Monday. “People should have the right to watch the programming they paid for — including football. Get it done!” According to the report, Disney’s quarterly earnings — scheduled for Thursday afternoon — could be driving the company
