On Thursday afternoon, after agreeing to a short extension while they continued negotiations, NBCUniversal and YouTube announced a new carriage deal to keep the network’s channels live on the streaming TV service. If the process sounds familiar, it’s because the same thing happened the last time their contract was renewed in 2021. They didn’t reveal the dollars involved, but a press release mentions that it includes an agreement for some full TV shows, clips, and highlights on regular YouTube, as well as confirming the relaunch of NBC Sports Network (NBCSN) after it shut down four years ago. “We’ve secured long-term access to our full portfolio of broadcast and cable networks on YouTube TV, and we’re advancing our Peacock strategy with an upcoming launch on YouTube Primetime Channels and

YouTube Bends the Knee – The Atlantic

If you measure only in dollars (and not in dignity), YouTube got a pretty good deal. This week, the Google-owned platform paid $24.5 million to settle a lawsuit brought by President Donald Trump after the company suspended his channel six days after the January 6 riot at the Capitol. At the time, YouTube said it was “concerned about the ongoing potential for violence.” (Trump’s account was eventually reinstated in March 2023.) The terms of the settlement will direct $22 million to the Trust for the National Mall, a nonprofit group that is raising money to finance an addition to the White House. Most creators are lucky if they get a gold plaque from YouTube; Trump’s getting a new ballroom. This is just the latest example of major tech companies bowing to Trump. Earlier this year, Meta and X settled similar lawsuits with Trump over suspending his accounts, paying $25 million and $10 million, respectively. These three companies alone have collectively paid Trump and his associates $59.5 million for the sin of enforcing the rules of their own privately held companies. There’s also Amazon, which made a reported $40 million deal with Melania Trump on a documentary project. Plus personal donations

YouTube TV keeps NBC with a last-minute extension but loses Univision – Engadget

YouTube TV has announced that it has reached a "short-term extension" agreement with NBCUniversal so that it can continue offering its programs while they negotiate a new long-term deal. The service warned customers last week that its partnership with NBCUniversal was going to expire on September 30 and that they haven't signed a new deal yet. It said at the time that NBC was asking the service "to pay more than what they charge consumers for the same content on Peacock, which would mean less flexibility and higher prices for subscribers." While YouTube TV was able to prevent the removal of NBC programs at the last minute, it wasn't able to reach a similar deal with Univision, the largest Spanish-language broadcaster in the US. It sent out an email to customers, telling them that it has failed to reach an agreement with TelevisaUnivision that reflects the value of its content. "Unfortunately their current demands aren’t supported by their performance on YouTube TV over the last four years," it said in the email. The broadcaster has "over 160 million subscribers and billions of views across YouTube," a YouTube spokesperson said in a statement. However, it apparently "only represents a

Univision Goes Dark on YouTube TV – Variety

Google’s YouTube TV has dropped Univision‘s local TV stations — along with other TelevisaUnivision-owned networks — after the two sides failed to come to terms on a contract renewal Tuesday. If TelevisaUnivision’s programming remains unavailable to YouTube TV subs for an “extended period of time, we’ll offer our Spanish Base subscribers a $6 credit or refund depending on your billing provider,” Google said in a message to the pay-TV service’s customers. Google separately Tuesday was squaring off with NBCUniversal in contract renewal talks for YouTube TV. NBCU’s current YouTube TV deal also is set to expire Sept. 30. As of this writing, talks between NBCU and Google continue. Popular on Variety Univision is the biggest Spanish-language broadcaster in the U.S., with 59 owned and/or operated stations. YouTube has agreed to pay $24.5m (£18.1m) to settle a lawsuit brought by Donald Trump after it banned his account following the January 6 Capitol riot. YouTube to pay $24.5m to settle Trump lawsuit over Capitol riot – BBC

YouTube has agreed to pay $24.5m (£18.6m) to settle a lawsuit brought by Donald Trump, filed after the video platform suspended his account in the wake of the 6 January attack on US Capitol. The settlement from the video streaming giant's parent company Alphabet - which also owns Google - comes after social media sites X/Twitter and Facebook also agreed to pay Trump for suspending his accounts. Trump had accused YouTube and other tech companies of political bias, claiming they had unfairly censored conservative voices after the Capitol riot in 2021. At the time of his suspension, social media companies said that Trump risked inciting further violence in Washington DC. As part of Monday's settlement, YouTube will pay $22m to the Trust for the National Mall, a non-profit group that is aiming to raise $200m to build a new ballroom at the White House. Another $2.5m will be paid to other organisations and individuals who joined Trump's lawsuit, including the American Conservative Union. YouTube is the latest major platform to settle with the president. In January, Facebook's parent company Meta agreed to a $25m settlement - with $22m earmarked for Trump's presidential library. A month later, social media platform X
