Disney to pay $10 million fine in FTC case for mislabeling videos on its YouTube channels

Disney has agreed to pay $10 million as part of its settlement with the Federal Trade Commission over charges it mislabeled some videos posted to YouTube, which allowed the collection of personal data from children under the age of 13. Disney failed to properly label some videos that it uploaded to YouTube as “Made for Kids,” which resulted in the collection of personal data from kids under 13 and the use of that data for targeted advertising to children, according to a news release issued by the FTC on Tuesday, Sept. 2. Online sites and services with content meant for children under the age of 13 are required to let parents know what personal information is collected and get their consent, under the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Rule, passed by Congress in 1998 and updated by the FTC in 2012. Disney gets revenue from ads it places on its videos and from YouTube, which pays Disney for ads it inserts on Disney videos, the FTC said. The mislabeling also exposed kids to age-inappropriate YouTube features like autoplay to videos not “Made for Kids,” the agency said. “This case underscores the FTC’s commitment to enforcing COPPA, which was enacted by Congress

Former state police sergeant arrested following investigation into viral Youtube confrontation

GROTON, Conn. (WFSB) - A former state police sergeant has been arrested following a confrontation in front of his home. On July 11, a Youtuber and his cameraman parked a digital billboard outside former state police sergeant Brian Fahey’s home in Groton. The billboard displayed a previous interaction the Youtuber, Sean Paul Reyes, had with Fahey in 2021 at the state police headquarters in Middletown. Reyes had gone to the home to confront Fahey over his alleged abuse of overtime. In the video, Fahey is seen grabbing a gun and spitting on Reyes. The incident was investigated by the Office of the State’s Attorney Judicial District of Windham. As a result of their investigation, 53-year-old Brian Fahey was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct. He was released on a court-set promise to appear for arraignment at Danielson Superior Court on September 3. Fahey was placed on unpaid administrative leave while the investigation unfolded. He later retired from the police force. Police said a mugshot was not provided because this is a misdemeanor crime. An internal affairs investigation report has revealed new details regarding a viral Youtube video involving a Connecticut State Police sergeant. Copyright 2025 WFSB. All rights reserved.
