Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak calls out YouTube over rampant scam videos

Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak reflected on how the internet, which was once a tool for empowerment, has now become a fertile ground for fraud, in a recent chat. In an interview with CBS, Wozniak said the computer revolution he helped start was good until the internet offered new business models, in ways that companies exercise power over other people. Steve Wozniak spoke about the prevalence of internet scams in a recent interview.(Bloomberg) “That's when some of the bad started happening,” Wozniak noted. Bitcoin scam hits close to home A YouTube scam used clips of Wozniak discussing bitcoin, falsely promising to double any cryptocurrency sent to a displayed address. Victims, including Jennifer Marion, collectively lost large sums: Marion alone sent 0.9 bitcoin, which was then valued at $59,000 and received nothing in return. Speaking about it, Wozniak’s wife, Janet, said the scammers had put a frame in the video, making false claims with a bitcoin address. This, she told CBS, was a tell-tale sign of it being a fraud. Despite reporting the video repeatedly, it stayed up. “YouTube is helping dupe people out of their money,” she said. There’s a Better Way to Watch YouTube on iPhone (Without the Algorithm or Shorts)

YouTube is a bit of a mess right now. It’s nowhere near as bad as Instagram or TikTok on this front, but it’s still easy to lose hours scrolling through YouTube videos and Shorts on your recommendation feed. The algorithm will get you at some point, no matter how hard you try. But there’s an alternative. A saner way to watch YouTube videos that you actually really do want to watch, without getting sucked into the YouTube black hole of recommended content. The answer you've been looking for is a third-party Watch Later app like Play . Play isn’t a fully-featured YouTube client (Google made sure to nerf all of those), but that’s actually a good thing. You use the app to find and sort videos you actually want to watch, without getting bothered by the algorithm. No comments, no feed, and yes, there’s an option to disable Shorts as well. Gather all your YouTube videos using the Play app The Play app can help you build your own watch later playlist that’s separate from YouTube itself. There’s no YouTube login here. You are free to save videos with multiple tags or folders. The point is to build a queue

Blackpink’s ‘Pink Venom’ Video Surpasses One Billion YouTube Views – uDiscoverMusic

When Blackpink rapped “get ‘em, get ‘em, get ‘em” on the “Pink Venom” chorus, they could have been talking about YouTube view counts. Almost exactly three years after its release, the video for “Pink Venom” has surpassed one billion YouTube views. “Pink Venom” is Blackpink’s sixth video to reach this milestone, following “DDU-DU DDU-DU,” “Kill This Love,” “BOOMBAYAH,” “AS IF IT’S YOUR LAST,” and “How You Like That.” Two videos from individual members, Lisa’s “Money” and Jennie’s “Solo,” have also joined the club. The song was released as the first single off the group’s sophomore record, Born Pink. “Pink Venom” peaked at number 22 on the Billboard Hot 100, while the album reached the top spot on the Billboard 200. The video has been making an impact since its release: “Pink Venom” was the biggest 24-hour music video debut of 2022, and the third-largest 24-hour music video debut of all time. Upon its premiere, the group broke the record previously held by their own “How You Like That” for the most-viewed video by a female artist or group in a single day. A key YouTube feature broke for Android users – Mashable

You'd think Android and YouTube would work together flawlessly, but early this week, that wasn't the case. As reported and confirmed by 9to5Google, YouTube users on Android devices couldn't change the playback speed on videos. Changing the speed to anything other than 1x would simply not work, as the setting change wouldn't save, acting as if you hadn't done it at all. Obviously, that's not a great user experience, considering that Android and YouTube are both Google's responsibility. It seems a bit strange for Android users specifically to lose access to a core YouTube feature, but that's what happened. Mashable Light Speed Thankfully, it seems that as of Wednesday morning, the issue has been fixed, per a YouTube community note. The note states that any users still experiencing the issue should simply close and reopen the app. Hopefully, by doing that, you can fix the problem and get back to frame-by-frame analysis of movie trailers at 0.25x speed. For once, it paid off to use a Google app on iOS instead.
