Clubhouse Conversations — Women Talking – The American Society of Cinematographers

Cinematographer Luc Montpellier, CSC is joined by interviewer Nancy Schreiber, ASC for this episode about his work on Women Talking — director Sarah Polley’s drama centered on the challenges faced by eight women living within an insular Mennonite colony. Based on the 2018 novel by Miriam Toews, Women Talking explores its women characters’ path toward self-determination in the aftermath of a series of rapes committed by the men in their religious community. The film marks the third collaboration between Montpellier and Polley, following their features Away From Her and Take This Waltz in 2006 and 2011, respectively. In this interview, Montpellier discusses developing the film’s desaturated color palette; lighting a key barn location to underscore the protagonists’ shared journey; and handling the abundance of visual effects the project demanded. Luc Montpellier, CSC is a Canadian cinematographer whose credits include features The Saddest Music in the World (2003), Away From Her (2006) and Take This Waltz (2011), and TV series Damien, Counterpart and Tales From the Loop.
