EU should ensure tech companies are regulated in the country they are based in – Bywire News

BRUSSELS (Bywire News)  – Vimeo Inc and three other tech companies took to Twitter on Thursday and said that any proposed rules by the EU should make sure the companies are regulated in the country they are located in.  Concern has grown amongst tech companies over European nations looking to grab regulatory power and try to alter the “country of origin” principle, written in the Digital Services Act (DSA) draft. Amazon is under the supervision of Luxembourg under the new rules, as that is where its headquarters lie. While Twitter, Apple, Alphabet unit Google and Facebook are regulated by Ireland, the base of their EU headquarters. Twitter, Vimeo, Automattic, the parent company of online publishing tool WordPress and Tumblr, and more, said, “A strong country of origin principle supports a diverse online marketplace,”  “Without it, we risk entrenching the largest players, reducing consumer choice and irreparably splintering the Digital Single Market.” They encouraged the DSA, to develop a standard definition for illegal content, and a coordinated enforcement system across the 27-country bloc.
