Fraudulent cashier’s checks used to buy vehicles on Facebook Marketplace, MALTB says More than $288,000 in property recovered Updated: 2:23 PM CDT Jul 24, 2025 Editorial Standards ⓘ An investigation into a tractor reported stolen from Rankin County led to a larger fraud investigation.The Mississippi Agriculture and Livestock Theft Bureau was contacted by a victim who reported on April 30 that a tractor was stolen using a fraudulent cashier’s check. That led to the recovery of more stolen property.“The suspects purchased trucks, cars, tractors and ATV/UTV vehicles from Facebook Marketplace with fraudulent cashier checks in at least three states,” according to a news release from MALTB. “Over $288,000 worth of property has been recovered as a result of this check fraud and theft ring.”MALTB and numerous other law enforcement agencies are involved in the ongoing investigation. MALTB Director Dean Barnard reminded the public that before taking any cashier’s check for a purchase from Facebook Marketplace, or any other online site, do research, verify the funds before the transaction, and make transactions at a safe place, like a local law enforcement parking lot.
