Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine is weighing appointments to two vacant judge seats in Montgomery County courtrooms. The judicial vacancies come after the retirements of Montgomery County Common Pleas Judge Dennis Adkins and Montgomery County Juvenile Court Judge Julie Bruns in recent months. Adkins retired at the end of 2025, and Bruns retired in February. The Ohio Supreme Court appointed visiting judges to hear cases for both seats until appointments are selected by the governor. When judges resign from their offices, Ohio’s governor gets to pick who will take over that seat. The Montgomery County Republican Party provided recommendations to the governor’s office for both seats, as DeWine is a Republican. Retired Judge Julie Bruns. The governor’s appointees will serve until voters pick replacements in the general election this fall. According to the Montgomery County Board of Elections, two Republican candidates have been certified in the May 5 primary race for Adkins’ unfilled term — Greene County Juvenile Court Magistrate Steve Abshire and local attorney Jack Pook.
