Meet Mr. Knight – UCLA Bruins

Smyrna, Delaware is approximately 2,730 miles from Smyrna to the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. But for Wayne Knight, the road to one of the most hallowed grounds of college football was considerably less direct. The journey began in a small Delaware town of 13,000 people and reached a crossroads on a couch in Harrisonburg, Virginia. It was on that couch in the football offices at James Madison University when Bob Chesney first met Knight.  Chesney had just arrived as the Dukes’ new head coach following the 2023 season. One of his players, Knight’s younger brother, Yamir, approached him about Wayne, who had stepped away from the team after appearing in just four games to retain a year of eligibility with a redshirt.   “I remember walking in that day and Wayne was sitting on the couch,” Chesney recalled. “We came into the office and talked a little bit and he’s like, “I wanted to be part of this team. I wanted to do more. I just was told there wasn’t going to be more for me to do and I didn’t want to burn a whole year.'” After talking with Chesney, Knight decided to return to James Madison.
