During Sunday’s “Panic On The Streets Of Springfield,” Lisa makes an imaginary friend named “Quilloughby,” an extremely on-the-nose caricature of Morrissey who sings in a band called “The Snuffs.” The Simpsons poked fun at Morrissey’s slow, sad descent into irrelevancy, from rebellious sex symbol, to moany, out-of-touch rocker who makes weird comments about immigration (and expresses support for far-right British political parties). The show depicted Quilloughby (voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch), reacting in horror to the sight of his future self, who has morphed into an overweight, meat-eating hypocrite, tangled up in frivolous lawsuits and having gained a reputation as a racist. Soon after the episode aired, a statement was posted to Morrissey’s Facebook account, angrily pushing back against The Simpsons, but the statement is arguably more amusing than the show’s satire.
