A teacher has been struck off after it emerged that he had been carrying on an inappropriate relationship with a 16-year-old student. The man, now legally known as Taurapa but previously known as Connor Taurapa Matthews, was a specialist Māori teacher at the Rangi Ruru Girls’ School – an exclusive girls’ boarding school in Christchurch, New Zealand. The girl, Helena Dray, chose to waive her right to anonymity in a Teachers Disciplinary Tribunal. The messages included love poems as well as frank questions about sex. Eventually this led to him inviting her to watch a movie with her, where Dray said Taurapa “kissed me and felt me up, too”.
