Media companies on TikTok are reporting an uptick in users following days of anti-police protests in France, seemingly confirming French President Emmanuel Macron’s claims that apps like TikTok and Snapchat may have a role in fuelling violent demonstrations. Several media companies that distribute their content on TikTok told Bloomberg that their audience has grown during the riots, which were sparked on June 27 following the fatal police shooting of a French teenager identified as Nahel M. in a suburb of Paris. A police officer has been arrested on charges of voluntary homicide in the 17-year-old’s death. Guillaume Lacrois, CEO of youth-oriented media company Brut, told Bloomberg his company has added 700,000 TikTok subscribers since Mahel’s killing, while Loopsider, another news company that distributes its content via social media, told Bloomberg they’ve had a four-fold increase in views, racking up more than 200 million in a week.
