Rafael Devers situation puts Tony Vitello’s leadership to test – New York Post

SAN FRANCISCO — Outside the visitors’ clubhouse in Miami this past Sunday, in front of the temporary backdrop the Giants’ PR department hauls with them on the road, I was struck by a sense of déjà vu. There was Tony Vitello, giving almost an identical answer to a similar question I had asked a little over a month earlier. How, as a first-year manager, would he hold to account one of his highly paid, highly prideful Giants veteran leader’s very publicly misbehaving? Giants manager Tony Vitello and Rafael Devers discussed Sunday’s incident on the flight back from Miami. Getty Images What Rafael Devers did in the ninth inning of the loss to the Marlins was a little different than Willy Adames’ embarrassing act in Los Angeles. You can debate the merits for which was worse: Paying more attention to a conversation with Mookie Betts than the number of outs, or trying to shoo away a teammate and at least giving the perception of undermining his manager. In neither case did it set the example a team should want from two of its most important players,  » Read More

Public Meetings This Week: Golf Clubhouse Plans Return Before Haverhill Board – WHAV

The public has opportunities to shape policy this week as various Haverhill boards meet. In the interest of transparency in government, WHAV provides this list of upcoming meetings every week on air and online. Plans to build a 4,710-square-foot clubhouse, a 5,000-square foot cart barn and paved parking area are back on the agenda of the Haverhill Conservation Commission for a formal public hearing this Thursday. Members will consider conditions to place on Newton-based Sterling Golf Management for its Crystal Lake Golf Club at 890 N. Broadway. As WHAV previously reported, commissioners first approved an order of conditions for 50 single-family homes and golf course improvements in 2009. The Commission is responsible for overseeing wetlands, storm water management and erosion issues. In its plan, the developer says, “Although the overall golf course layout has evolved from the 2009 approval, the proposed improvements remain generally consistent with the previously developed clubhouse footprint area.” Abutter Stephen Galinsky, 950 N. Broadway, submitted a letter last March to commissioners, raising several issues regarding drainage.  » Read More

Belgium’s Doku dashes back to London for birth of son | The Straits Times

Belgian winger Jeremy Doku was able to attend the birth of his son in London on June 22 and will return to his national team on June 23. Doku’s wife Shireen gave birth to a son named Praise on June 22, the Belgian football federation said in a statement attributed to team doctor Brahim Hacene. “As he had already been receiving appropriate medical treatment for several days, he was able to fly without medical risk to be with his family during this very special moment,” Hacene said in a statement. “He was accompanied by my colleague, Dr Brecht De Coninck. Everything went perfectly, and the mother, father, and baby are all doing wonderfully. Jeremy will rejoin the squad tomorrow (June 23) evening in Seattle,” Hacene added. Doku heard criticism from Belgium fans when he said he would plan to return to Europe for his wife, who was due in the second week of July – coinciding with the World Cup quarter-finals. “If you ask me what I want, my answer is that nobody wants to miss the birth of their first child.  » Read More

Stelton: J.P. Crawford again shows immense leadership for Mariners – Seattle Sports

After spending eight seasons as the Seattle Mariners’ starting shortstop, J.P. Crawford embarked on a new chapter of his career this past week while sliding over to make his first four starts with the club at third base. Mariners prospect Kade Anderson extends long scoreless streak The position change was ultimately Crawford’s idea – a team-first move the 31-year-old former Gold Glove Award winner pitched to the Mariners last month to make room at shortstop for 20-year-old top prospect Colt Emerson. Seattle Sports’ Bob Stelton highlighted Crawford’s move to the hot corner during his weekly Bob’s Baseball Breakdown, saying it’s yet another example of the de facto team captain’s leadership within the Mariners’ clubhouse. “There’s nothing but praise (from his teammates) and raving about the character that he possesses and how he’s a leader – whether he’s out there on the mound talking to a pitcher who may be scuffling a bit, or whether he’s taking Colt Emerson and Cole Young under his wing,” Stelton said.  » Read More
