A federal judge on Tuesday denied Apple, Google and Meta Platforms’ requests to dismiss lawsuits claiming they promoted illegal gambling by hosting and accepting commissions from casino-style apps that addict users. U.S. District Judge Edward Davila in San Jose, California, rejected the companies’ main argument that Section 230 of the federal Communications Decency Act, which protects online platforms from liability over third-party content, shielded them from the proposed class actions. Davila dismissed some claims alleging violations of some U.S. state laws, but denied motions to dismiss all claims brought under consumer protection laws except in California. Google, a unit of Alphabet, had no immediate comment. Apple and Meta did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The plaintiffs’ lawyers did not immediately respond to similar requests. Dozens of plaintiffs contended that Apple’s App Store, Google’s Play Store and Meta’s Facebook promoted an “authentic Vegas-style experience of slot machine gambling” through an illegal racketeering conspiracy. By exploiting users, the defendants allegedly triggered depression, suicidal thoughts and other consequences, while brokering and collecting 30% commissions – estimated at more than $2 billion – on transactions they processed,  » Read More

The Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday extended the contract of manager Don Kelly, who took over on an interim basis in May after Derek Shelton was fired. The club did not reveal terms of the new agreement. The Pirates started the season 12-26, then went 59-65 under Kelly, starting with his managerial debut on May 9. “I’m proud to continue leading the Pirates,” Kelly said in a release. “Our clubhouse is full of players who care deeply about each other, about winning, and about representing Pittsburgh the right way. I was a Pirates fan first. I know our fans deserve a team that delivers on the field, and it’s on me to make sure we reach that standard.” Pittsburgh swept seven series under Kelly, including one in June against the National League East champion Philadelphia Phillies and another in September against the NL West champion Los Angeles Dodgers. “Donnie has earned the respect of the players, front office, and our fans — and he has certainly earned mine,” Pirates chairman Bob Nutting said.  » Read More

Kelly, 45, was promoted to manager May 8 after the franchise fired longtime skipper Derek Shelton following a 12-26 start. Although the Pirates still finished last in the NL Central, they showed a marked improvement after the managerial change, going 59-65 under Kelly. The Pirates were one game below .500 during the second half and ended 2025 with a winning record at home. "Donnie has earned the respect of the players, front office, and our fans - and he has certainly earned mine," Pirates chairman Bob Nutting said in a statement. "Donnie took over the team at a true low point. Since then, we've seen meaningful progress, not just in the clubhouse culture, but on the field. "His connection to the community and passion for the franchise make him more than just a manager. He is a Pittsburgher; he is part of our community.  » Read More

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (AP) — Rory McIlroy won the Ryder Cup and then called out the hostile New York crowd for “unacceptable and abusive behavior.” Over his five matches at Bethpage Black, McIlroy endured a torrent of insults about everything from his personal life to past failures on the golf course. People shouted out as he lined up to swing and putt. His wife was hit by a cup of beer. “What happened here this week is not acceptable,” McIlroy said on said Sunday after going 3-1-1 to help Europe to a 15-13 victory over the U.S. at Bethpage Black on Long Island. His lone loss came in a Sunday singles match with world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, who had also played in all five rounds, that was more of a slog than a pristine, shot-for-shot battle of the world’s top two players. It was McIlroy’s most blunt assessment yet of a New York crowd that Europe fully expected to be rowdy and passionate — captain Luke Donald even gave players virtual reality goggles to get used to the noise — but maybe not this crass or downright obnoxious.  » Read More

The chants echoed across the Fenway Park concourse, as fans streamed through the narrow corridor celebrating the club’s first playoff appearance in four years. Mere feet away, separated by brick walls that have seen more than their fair share of agony and ecstasy over the years, the 2025 Red Sox were gearing up to do the same. By the time the door to the Red Sox home clubhouse opened to the media more than 15 minutes after the final out, the party was already well underway. Plastic tarps lined the walls and ceilings. Champagne and beer soaked the carpeted floor. The clubhouse furniture that normally adorned the players’ space was nowhere to be found. In its place was an overpowering smell of cigar smoke and a mass of humanity. Most of the players wore the officially licensed red “October Baseball” locker room shirt, though a few dispensed with the playoff merch and opted to go shirtless. Roman Anthony, Marcelo Mayer, Romy Gonzalez and Wilyer Abreu were among that contingent, with the 22-year-old Mayer pouring beer on everyone who crossed his path.  » Read More

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (AP) — This could have been Phil Mickelson’s week. This could have been his Ryder Cup. The 55-year-old six-time major champion who led an exodus to the breakaway LIV Golf league has more appearances (12) than any player in the U.S. vs. Europe event. He would have been a natural to captain the team at Bethpage Black. Bethpage is the brawny muni outside New York City where the tradition of fans serenading him with “Happy Birthday” took off in 2002. It’s where Mickelson returned to golf shortly after his wife was diagnosed with cancer in 2009, and where two of his agonizing six runner-up finishes came in the only major he never won, the U.S. Open. “That’s where I felt things kind of clicked” with the New York fans, Mickelson said in 2019, before his return to the course for the PGA Championship, which remains his last big appearance here. Mickelson loved New York and New York loved its adopted left-hander. At the Ryder Cup,  » Read More
