Ryder Cup Is Never Easy To Win On The Road. Europe Has Done It Only Four Times

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (AP) — Rory McIlroy, who became only the sixth player in history to complete the career Grand Slam of majors by winning the Masters, now faces another tall order. McIlroy has been saying for the last few years that winning the Ryder Cup away on the road is the biggest accomplishment in golf. He would know. McIlroy was on the last winning road team in this passionate competition. That was 13 years ago and required so much to go right on the final day in the Chicago suburbs that it became known as the “Miracle at Medinah.” “We weren’t supposed to win in ’12,” McIlroy once said. “Even since then, the home team has won, each time pretty convincingly.” The Americans were coming off a record rout over Europe in 2021 — 19-9 — when they went went to Marco Simone in Italy with hopes of ending 30 years without a road victory. Europe swept the opening session and sailed to a five-point win.  » Read More

Watch: Dodgers Clubhouse Toast For Clayton Kershaw & Clinching Spot In Postseason

The Los Angeles Dodgers went into Friday’s game against the San Francisco Giants hoping to have a celebratory night in recognition of Clayton Kershaw’s career and also in position to officially secure a spot in the postseason. Doing so was going to require a Dodgers win or loss by the Arizona Diamondbacks. Controlling their own destiny got off to a bumpy beginning as Kershaw surrendered a leadoff home run in the first inning. He wasn’t overly sharp but managed to limit the Giants to two runs while collecting six strikeouts over 4.1 innings. Kershaw exited the game to a prolonged standing ovation from the sold-out crowd at Dodger Stadium. He didn’t factor into the decision but the night wound up ending in triumph. The Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks shortly before the Dodgers completed their win over the Giants. A special toast for Kersh. pic.twitter.com/fxTk4Y6oXg — Los Angeles Dodgers (@Dodgers) September 20, 2025 "This has to be the most important six weeks of our lives…because we have what everyone wants." pic.twitter.com/mRnfqcASMB — Los Angeles Dodgers (@Dodgers) September 20,  » Read More

Skenes: ‘There’s room to get better’ in Pirates’ clubhouse | theScore.com

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Paul Skenes is not thinking about the Cy Young speech he'll likely be asked to make the week before Thanksgiving. The Pittsburgh Pirates ace isn't thinking about the elite company he's kept through his first two big-league seasons either. The 23-year-old doesn't pitch to win awards, but games. And neither Skenes — though largely through no fault of his own — nor his team have done enough of that to avoid another last-place finish in the NL Central. So no matter how much Skenes believes he's grown professionally during his first full season in the majors — and he's a near lock to become the first player in four decades to win the Rookie of the Year one year and the Cy Young the next — he's more concerned about how the Pirates respond over the winter. "This is a wasted year if we don't learn what we need to do and we don't know why we didn't go out there and do what we wanted to do," Skenes said Friday.  » Read More

RYDER CUP ’25: For Cameron Young, A New York Homecoming In The Works For 12 Years

NAPA, Calif. (AP) — Bethpage Black is a big ballpark on Long Island that made the boy feel even smaller. He was holding his father’s hand on Father’s Day in 2002 as they watched the U.S. Open won by Tiger Woods. It was Cameron Young’s first glimpse of golf at the highest level. He was 5, already hitting a pyramid stack of range balls until his tiny hands were sore, able to hit a wedge into a 55-gallon drum from 30 yards away. Young has a much clearer memory of the day in 2013 when the PGA of America announced golf’s rowdiest event, the Ryder Cup, would be played in 2025 at Bethpage Black with its notoriously loud New York fans who felt ownership of the state-owned course. By then he was a junior in high school, good enough and old enough to dream, even if it felt so far away. “That golf course is where our state Open was every year. That was the big tournament for me at that point,” Young said,  » Read More

Clayton Kershaw to retire after 18 years with Dodgers and more than 3000 strikeouts

LOS ANGELES (AP) — An emotional Clayton Kershaw said Thursday he will retire at the end of the season, having spent his entire 18-year career with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Wiping his eyes, his voice choking at times, Kershaw said he knew going into the season that it was likely going to be his last, but he didn’t want to say anything in case he changed his mind. “I’m really not sad. I’m really at peace with this. It’s just emotional and I tried to hold it together,” he said at a Dodger Stadium news conference. “I told our guys not to make it weird today because I was going to get weird if you make it weird, and here I am making it weird.” The three-time Cy Young Award winner had his wife, Ellen, and four children with him in the room crowded with his teammates, manager Dave Roberts and media. “I’ve just never been around a greater competitor,” Roberts said. “Very accountable, very consistent. He’s made me better and I think we’ve both grown together so I feel fortunate to have been able to manage him and be around him for 10 years.” Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Clayton

Cubs soak in the moment after clinching first postseason berth since 2020 – WHEC.com

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The wait was five years. It seemed longer. In the middle of a darkened visitors clubhouse at PNC Park, the Chicago Cubs embraced each other. Champagne flowed and flew. They clinched a postseason berth for the first time since 2020, but celebrated for the first time since 2017. Everything was muted during the coronavirus pandemic when the Cubs last qualified. They held off after making it in 2018, hoping to win the NL Central, just to finish second to the Milwaukee Brewers. After defeating the Pittsburgh Pirates 8-4 on Wednesday, Chicago finally decided to let loose. “When you’re in it, you think it’s going to happen every year,” pitcher Matthew Boyd said. “The fact and the reality is this is really hard to do. … This means so much to all of us. We’re not done yet. That’s the most important thing. We still know where we want to go.” The Cubs (88-64) seemed destined for the playoffs since going 18-9 in May. Still, this hasn’t been straightforward.  » Read More
