Women’s Open 2025 Round 1: What to know as Japan dominates the leaderboard

PORTHCAWL, WALES – It was both rain and shine on the first day of the Women’s Open at Royal Porthcawl. Luckily for the 144-strong field, there was more sunshine than rain showers as they competed for a pot of gold, which has gotten bigger this year. Whoever can tame what is already proving to be a wild and windy course will now take home an improved paycheck of $1.46 million, a 15 per cent share of the $9.75 million prize purse. It was a robust showing for Japan on Thursday, with three Japanese players on top and six in the top 13 at the end of play. Eri Okayama was the first player into the clubhouse after registering a round of 67 to put herself 5-under-par. Rio Takeda, who co-led the first round of the U.S. Open in May, had a double bogey at nine but still ended the day tied for first, with a birdie at the last putting her next to Okayama. Women’s Open debutant Shiho Kuwaki (-3) kicked things off as the initial clubhouse leader.  » Read More

After Bryce Harper-Rob Manfred confrontation, Mark DeRosa warned Phillies of commish’s power

After Philadelphia Phillies star Bryce Harper got in the face of Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred during a heated meeting last week, Mark DeRosa, a former big leaguer who now works for Manfred, said something some players took as a threat, according to four people who attended the meeting or were briefed on it. “The commissioner’s a powerful guy, don’t f— around with him,” was the tone of DeRosa’s message. Some players were angry at his implication that a commissioner, who has oversight of so many on- and off-field personnel and processes in the sport, could retaliate if they didn’t fall in line with what a commissioner wants, the sources said. After DeRosa’s statement, a player in the room raised the possibility of MLB using the drug-testing program as a means of retribution. However, DeRosa, an MLB Network broadcaster and 16-year major-league veteran, said he was just joking when reached by The Athletic. “Shame on me for thinking I had a better relationship with some of the players in there than I guess I do,” said DeRosa,  » Read More

Padraig Harrington Wins Senior British Open For His Second Senior Major Title This Year

BERKSHIRE, England (AP) — Padraig Harrington was so focused on his game that he didn’t notice a leaderboard or see Rory McIlroy walking in the gallery Sunday at the Senior British Open. He closed with a 3-under 67 to win his second senior major of the year. Staked to a two-shot lead, Harrington made eagle on the first hole on the Old Course at Sunningdale and no one got closer than two shots the rest of the way as he became the fifth player with a Senior British Open and a British Open title. He won by three shots over Thomas Bjorn (67) and Justin Leonard (68). “I’m thrilled to have won but very satisfied that I’ve won a Senior Open with my two Opens,” Harrington said. “The fact that only five people have ever done it is quite special. I’m quite proud that I’ve managed to survive this long in the game.” He joined Darren Clarke, Tom Watson, Gary Player and Bob Charles as players to have won the British Open and the senior version.  » Read More

Lottie Woad, A Former Florida State Star, Wins The Women’s Scottish Open In Her Pro Debut

IRVINE, Scotland (AP) — Lottie Woad tapped in one final birdie, plucked the ball out of the cup and gave a simple wave to the crowd as if she had done this before. The English star made it look easy Sunday when she won the Women’s Scottish Open in her professional debut. Woad never flinched when Hyo Joo Kim made a charge on a windy day at Dundonald Links, closing with a 4-under 68 for a three-shot victory. Woad is the second player in three years to win on the LPGA Tour in her pro debut, following Rose Zhang in the Mizuho Americas Open at Liberty National in 2023. Woad finished at 21-year 267 and earned $300,000. “I think it’s quite hard to do that, but very special to win in my first event,” Woad said. “Everyone was chasing me today, and managed to maintain the lead and played really nicely down the stretch and hit a lot of good shots.” Kim had opened with four birdies in seven holes,  » Read More
