When people in addiction go missing, their loved ones often turn to Facebook groups to find them

A woman recently posted photos of her brother in a local Facebook group, saying he hung out in Kensington — where there's a vast open-air drug market — and that she hadn't heard from him in three years.  "I pray daily I can hear his voice and see him again," she wrote, asking for help. MORE: GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic have been gamechangers for weight loss. Can they have a similar effect on addiction? Another woman recently posted in the same online forum to see if anyone had information about her mom, who also spends time in the Kensington. "My heart hurts," the woman wrote. "Something isn't right." Messages like these pop up daily in Facebook groups like Lost in Kensington, Found in Kensington and Found in Camden — each dedicated to helping people locate missing loved ones in the Philadelphia region. Many of the missing people have substance use disorders. Sometimes, their families fear they are dead. That was the case for Craig and Connie Snyder,  » Read More

Tourism Minister Regrets Using AI in Facebook Post – VOCM

The minister of tourism says she regrets posting a manipulated image of The Rooms on her Facebook page. Minister Andrea Barbour posted an image of herself standing outside The Rooms to mark Tourism Week. The image includes an elaborate – and completely fictitious – logo on the front of the altered building. From Andrea’s Barbour’s post (Facebook) Barbour was asked about the alteration during Question Period by tourism critic Bettina Ford. “The photo was either AI generated, or doctored,” says Ford. “The impressive artwork of the caribou, representing the Royal Newfoundland Regiment at the main entrance, was removed with an unknown logo replacing it. Why is the minister in her Facebook post redesigning the entrance to such an iconic tourism landmark?” Ford asked. “Speaker, I’m not sure what she’s talking about, so I’ll have to go back and look at the picture and get back to you.” Barbour later admitted to using ChatGPT to create the image for Tourism Week and regrets that the background was altered in doing so.  » Read More

Facebook, Google ‘profited from adverts for illegal medicines’, report claims

Facebook and Google have generated profits from advertisements for unregulated health supplements, including products deemed illegal by various national health authorities, in breach of European laws, new research has claimed. Reset Tech, a German-headquartered non-profit with ties to eBay founder and philanthropist Pierre Omidyar, said it has collected more than 352,000 advertisements promoting so-called clickbait cures on Meta’s and Google’s platforms. The policy and research organisation said the adverts constitute a “direct violation” of articles 34 and 35 of the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), “regarding systemic risks to public health and the obligations of Very Large Online Platforms”. In response to questions from The Irish Times last week, Google and Facebook (owned by Meta) said they have strict rules around medical advertisements on their platforms and take swift action to remove content and ban advertisers. Nashville man buys a street-legal land-speed motorcycle from Facebook Marketplace and …

A street-legal land-speed motorcycle listed on Facebook Marketplace was all it took to set one Nashville YouTuber on a very questionable adventure. The plan sounded simple: buy it and ride it home. But vehicles built for land-speed records aren’t exactly known for comfort. Let’s just say things didn’t go entirely to plan. It’s technically street-legal The bike itself wasn’t an ordinary motorcycle. Built around a high-powered GSX-R engine and originally designed for land-speed racing, the land-speed motorcycle featured a stretched, low-slung body with a sidecar-like layout. Bikes and Beards It looked more like something built to break records than an actual road-going vehicle. Despite that, it had just enough equipment to technically qualify as street legal. When the host of YouTube channel Bikes and Beards, Sean Kerr, climbed in, it was clear this wouldn’t be a relaxed cruise home. Bikes and Beards The riding position was cramped to the point of absurdity,  » Read More

The unlikeliest of weathermen followed by more than a million on Facebook – The Independent

The Jammu–Srinagar National Highway is the lifeline of the Kashmir Valley. It’s the only all-weather link connecting the region to the rest of India and has carried the economic and social pulse of the Valley for decades. While two alternative routes, the Sinthan Road and the Mughal Road, exist, both remain closed during winter due to heavy snowfall, making the Jammu–Srinagar National Highway the sole supply corridor through which essential commodities reach Kashmir. Last August, severe flash floods forced the highway to remain closed for 15 days. This caused a near standstill in life and trade. The closure resulted in significant economic losses, particularly for the horticulture sector, which relies heavily on timely transportation. Trucks brimming with apples, pears and other fruits were stranded for days, resulting in significant financial losses for growers and traders. In this challenging terrain, a local figure has become an invaluable source of information and reassurance for travellers: Tahir Ahmad Giri, better known as Tahir Banihali.  » Read More
