Satirical Facebook page targets little free libraries – Victoria Times Colonist

The man behind it says he had no idea anyone would think he was being sincere, and many of the comments of angry book-lovers have made him laugh. A Facebook page called Residents for Responsible Free Little Library Growth popped up a few weeks ago. The page expressed concern about the growing number of little free libraries in Victoria and wondered if city council should put a limit on how high they can be built. “You can’t just change the identity of a neighbourhood without a conversation,” reads one post. Another worries about how the book cupboards will affect their vacation rentals. “My Airbnb listing specifically advertises a quiet, book-scarce residential atmosphere,” it says. A third says: “I have nothing against books. Some of my best friends read.” While some took to their keyboards in protest, it soon became obvious the page was satirical. The man behind the account is Jack Barker, a Victoria resident who loves little libraries and came up with the idea for the page while walking through Fernwood and admiring them.  » Read More

Mark Zuckerberg Looking To Start His Own Polymarket Rival – Kotaku

Fresh off a failed metaverse, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg is reportedly looking to enter the booming but ethically rancid world of prediction markets. Rivaling other platforms like Polymarket and Kalshi, the app internally known as “Arena” is looking to integrate the company’s massive user base into gambling over anything and everything. “We believe that prediction markets are one of the more interesting new content types,” writes Meta’s Ime Archibong in an internal post leaked to The New York Times . “With the right containers, the social conversation is the payoff as people aim to show off how good they are at predicting things to their friends.” According to The Times, the plan is to launch Arena as a standalone app and, if successful, harmonize it with Meta’s sprawling social media empire. The incentive is clear, with billions wagered away on these speculative markets every year. The Times also says that Arena is causing internal conflict amid Meta staff, as the ethics and legality of these platforms have only continued to grow murky.  » Read More

Team Peterson taking hiatus from women’s curling

Team Peterson taking hiatus from women's curling Team Peterson will not be hitting the road together on tour next season. The Saint Paul, Minn., crew announced Friday they're stepping away from competitive curling for the year. "We’re grateful beyond words for every person who's been part of this ride," the team said. "This isn’t goodbye forever. It’s just a pause to recharge and come back even stronger when the time is right." Tabitha Peterson skipped the squad alongside her sister Tara at second, Cory Thiesse at third and Taylor Anderson-Heide at lead. The team represented the U.S. at the Olympic Winter Games in Milano Cortina and finished fourth, missing the podium after losing to Canada in the bronze medal game. Peterson, who ended the season ranked ninth in the world, took the long road to reach Milano Cortina, earning the last berth through the Olympic Qualification Event in mid-December. Although Team Peterson will be taking a break, Thiesse will remain with USA Curling's national program for mixed doubles with Korey Dropkin.  » Read More

Manuel Singh was abroad when he received a Facebook message saying that his 26-year-old son, Irving, was on his way to hospital. Irving had just left the Meadows Music Festival in Fergus on May 30. He was on his way to his vehicle when he was stuck by a passing pick-up truck. The driver did not stop. Singh was a guest on The Mike Farwell Show, where he described what they had learned about what happened to his son that night. “He (Irving), decided to beat the traffic and walk to his car. A witness that we spoke to said there was a pick-up truck going in and out of the lane, and he was hit. And he (the witness) just saw Irving flying through the air and landing on the ground. Pokes Insider: Dave Hampton’s time has come – University of Wyoming Athletics

LARAMIE – Dave Hampton's Wyoming career will not be lost to history.   The three-time Western Athletic Conference champion will be inducted into the UW Collegiate Athletics Hall of Fame on Sept. 11.   Hampton (1966-68) played during the "Golden Era" of Cowboy football, when his statistics were overshadowed while serving as Jim Kiick's blocking back for two seasons.   Fifty-eight years after leaving Laramie to begin a lengthy NFL career, Hampton has received his hall call.   "It really was such a surprise," said Hampton, who added that he is grateful for selection committee members Bill Schrage and Sally Ann Shurmur pushing for his inclusion in the 2026 class. "I didn't even consider getting in so late after my career was up."   Hampton played on offense, defense and returned kicks for the Pokes during his first two seasons.   In 1966, UW finished 10-1 with a victory over Florida State in the Sun Bowl. In 1967, the star-studded Cowboys finished the regular season 10-0 and ranked No. 6 before losing 20-13 to LSU in the Sugar Bowl.  » Read More

Meta plans to release AI-powered prediction market app, documents show – NPR

Kelly Sullivan/Getty Images North America hide caption toggle caption Kelly Sullivan/Getty Images North America Meta is planning to launch its own prediction market app to compete with companies like Kalshi and Polymarket in a booming sector that some analysts project could become a $1 trillion industry in the coming years. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has instructed a team to start building a standalone app called Arena where people can guess the outcome of real-world events, according to two employees who were not authorized to speak publicly about the project. Meta's plans to build a prediction market app were first reported by The New York Times. NPR obtained internal Meta documents about the effort that have not been previously reported. The documents describe how instead of wagering real money, users of the new app will receive "a daily virtual allotment" of "play money" that can be used to bet on "the outcome of future events." Facebook group Gay Barchives captures glory days, forges connections

About five years ago, LGBTQ culture maven Art Smith created a Facebook group called Gay Barchives as a way to preserve the histories of LGBTQ bars and clubs. The original idea was to capture logos, photos, and personal recollections of fun times at defunct, often legendary gay nightlife venues. Over the years, their mission expanded to include current bars not only from the U.S. but all over the world.  The group gradually accrued several thousand members until last March, when the inconceivable happened. Membership skyrocketed, hitting 50K members. Gay City News recently caught up with Art via video call to talk about the joys and pitfalls of documenting queer nightlife online. The interview has been condensed and edited. First off, congratulations on the incredible milestone with Gay Barchives. You’ve already surpassed 64K members, not just 50K. How did this all begin? It feels a little crazy, honestly. The seeds were planted at the end of 2019 when I interviewed my friend Vicki Vara, whose family owned a dozen gay bars in Atlanta over time,  » Read More
