Virginia Signs West Florida Transfer Veresia Yon

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia volleyball head coach Shannon Wells announced the signing of middle blocker Veresia Yon (Tallahassee, Fla./Lincoln HS) on Saturday (April 16). Yon, a transfer from the University of West Florida, was named the AVCA’s 2021 South Region Player of the Year and a First Team All-American at the Division-II level. “We are very excited to have Veresia join the UVA volleyball family,” said Wells. “Veresia has spent the last four years at one of the premiere Division-II programs in the country with a well-respected coaching staff that assisted in her development as one of the best players in program history. Her experience, athleticism, and ability to terminate the ball at a high level will allow her to compete immediately for our program. Veresia has only known winning at the collegiate level, and we cannot wait for her to bring that type of experience to our program.” Last season, Yon led West Florida to the round of 16 in the Division-II NCAA Tournament as the Argonauts finished with an overall record of 35-2 and went a perfect 16-0 in conference play.  » Read More

Nearly 100 people at this NJ school got brain tumors — a survivor demands answers – New York Post

A cancer survivor is vowing to untangle the twisted mystery of why almost 100 people associated with a New Jersey high school have developed “extremely” rare malignant brain tumors. Al Lupiano is among the 94 former staff and students from Colonia High School in the Woodbridge Township School District who have been stricken by the devastating diagnoses in recent years. “I will not rest until I have answers,” Lupiano, 50, declared in an interview with NJ.com and the Star-Ledger on Thursday. “I will uncover the truth.” Among the others diagnosed with brain cancer was Lupiano’s younger sister, who passed away from the disease in February at the age of 44. The devoted brother promised his sister on her deathbed that he would get to the bottom of what was causing the apparent cancer cluster at Colonia High. On Tuesday — after a public push by Lupiano — local officials approved an emergency probe of the school. Al Lupiano and wife Michelle. Last year, his wife — who also attended Colonia — was diagnosed with a rare brain tumor.  » Read More

Every Drink Brand Should Follow AriZona's Lead – The Takeout

I spent a good chunk of my childhood shuffling in and out of my local White Hen Pantry convenience store, picking out treats after swim lessons or cavity-free dentist appointments. The choice was always obvious: AriZona Iced Tea. It was larger than anything else in the beverage case—23 whopping ounces!—emblazoned with Trapper Keeper-esque colors and shapes, and my mom drank it, so it seemed instantly more healthy (it wasn’t) and sophisticated (it was) than the puny soft drinks that stood beside it. Most importantly, though, it cost 99 cents a can, leaving enough change in my two-dollar allotment to tack on a bag of Swedish Fish. Now, 30 years later, when so much has changed, those cans still cost 99 cents. In the midst of historic inflation, how is this consistency even possible?A recent Los Angeles Times article dives deep on the economics of AriZona Iced Tea, which has held fast to the promise on its Big AZ Can for decades. Don Vultaggio, founder of the still independent beverage company he runs with his two sons,  » Read More

Endangered animals for sale as illegal wildlife trafficking 'thrives' on Facebook – The Independent

Facebook is a thriving marketplace for illegal wildlife trade, allowing “frightening” volumes of trafficking of endangered species, an investigation has found. The platform’s algorithms are actively boosting the spread of content by illegal poachers, so that they are seen by more people, researchers say.Posts of animals for sale included pygmy marmosets, the world’s smallest monkey, as well as tigers, leopards, pangolins and African grey parrots. The social campaign organisation Avaaz, which carried out the investigation, said the trade was having a devastating effect on biodiversity. It accused Facebook of systematically failing to enforce its own policies by both allowing the posts and also actively recommending similar content to that which researchers had already viewed.Facebook’s guidelines ban content seeking to buy, sell or donate endangered species or their parts. The investigators said they found 129 posts containing potentially harmful wildlife trafficking content in a matter of clicks just from Facebook’s search bar. They said it showed how “frightening volumes” of online harmful wildlife trafficking content goes unchecked.  » Read More
