Some social media posts erroneously claim the company is changing its privacy policies to allow for widespread monitoring, but the upcoming change will instead allow the company to monitor your interactions with its Meta AI chatbot. The change, which takes effect on Dec. 16, is intended to better "personalize content and ads recommendations” across its services. An example given by Meta says if you talk to the AI chatbot about a topic such as hiking, "you might start seeing recommendations for hiking groups, posts from friends about trails, or ads for hiking boots.” Meta also highlights how this is similar to other features on its platforms. For example, if you watch an Instagram Reel about hiking, it would then know to highlight similar content in the future, or it may influence which ads you see. » Read More

At 3:53 in the morning on October 14, Shyreka Wallace routinely scrolled Facebook before her appointment. Then she saw it — a post that would change everything. “She posted on Facebook looking for someone who needed a new organ,” Wallace recalls. For 25 years, Wallace has lived with lupus, a disease that causes her body to attack itself. The Killeen woman knows pain intimately — the kind that can make walking nearly impossible and cause weight fluctuations from steroids. It’s the constant sickness that comes with fighting an invisible enemy. “It’s painful at times. Sometimes you can hardly walk. You stay sick a lot. Your weight goes up and down because of the steroids you’re on,” she said. This wasn’t Wallace’s first dance with organ failure. In 2005, her kidneys gave out. She waited five grueling years for a match, five years of watching her health decline while hoping for a miracle that seemed increasingly unlikely. » Read More

Défenseur des Droits ruled in a decision last month that Meta, Facebook's parent company, is breaking French anti-discrimination law for the sexist job ads recommendations of its algorithm. "The system implemented to disseminate job opportunities treats users of the Facebook platform differently because of their gender and constitutes indirect discrimination on the basis of sex," the Défenseur des Droits ruled. It gave Meta three months to implement measures to ensure the non-discriminatory nature of the display of advertisements for job opportunities. Facebook's discriminatory algorithm The decision comes after a complaint filed by French women's rights organisations, Fondation des Femmes and Femmes Ingénieures, in collaboration with investigative campaigning organisation Global Witness.
