Facebook and AARP to pay $12.5 million for sharing user data – claim up to $237 by this deadline

Facebook and AARP to pay $12.5 million for sharing user data - claim up to $237 by this deadline If you ever watched a video on AARP.org using your Facebook account, you could receive up to 237 dollars. Yes, really. The AARP Administration (the largest retiree association in the U.S.) has reached a 12.5 million dollar settlement with Facebook (Meta) after being sued for sharing users’ personal data without their consent. Apparently, AARP allowed Facebook to track the videos viewed on its website. And no, that’s not legal. Although AARP denies having done anything illegal, of course, it conveniently agreed to pay to close the case and avoid a much longer (and more public) process. What really happened The case is called Markels et al. v. AARP and was filed in the Northern District Court of California. The lawsuit accuses AARP of violating the Video Privacy Protection Act (VPPA) by allowing Facebook to receive information about users’ viewing habits. Each time someone played a video on AARP.org, the information (title,  » Read More

Palatka man steals coquina rocks from Flagler construction site, caught selling them on Facebook

Oct. 30A hard rock life3:27 p.m. – 3500 block of County Road 205, Bunnell Grand theft. A Palatka man was arrested for stealing coquina rock from a Flagler County residential construction site and trying to sell it on Facebook Marketplace. The co-owners of the construction business had noticed their coquina rocks were going missing over a few months. On Oct. 20, two distinctive, large coquina rocks went missing from the construction site and, two days later, appeared for sale on Facebook, according to an arrest report.  One of the co-owners messaged the suspect selling them and then contacted the Sheriff's Office about the theft. The co-owner sent deputies screenshots of the listing and conversation, which included photos of the rocks at the construction site, based on the landscaping and street layout.  The suspect was identified as a Palatka, Florida resident. The suspect agreed to sell the rocks to his "buyer" for $3,200. The rocks have an estimated value of $1,200-$1,600, the report said. On Oct. 30, the suspect drove Espanola to meet the "buyer" and instead found Sheriff's Office deputies.  » Read More

Internal documents show Meta is earning billions of dollars from a deluge of fraudulent ads

Meta projected last year that it would earn about 10 per cent of its overall annual revenue — $US16 billion ($24.6 billion) — from running advertising for scams and banned goods, internal company documents show. Users of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp were exposed to fraudulent e-commerce and investment schemes, illegal online casinos and the sale of banned medical products. The unreported documents reviewed by Reuters show that for at least three years, the social media giant failed to identify and stop an avalanche of ads that were shown to billions of people. On average, one December 2024 document notes, the company showed its platforms' users an estimated 15 billion "higher risk" scam advertisements every day. Meta earns about $US7 billion in annualised revenue from this category of scam ads each year, another late 2024 document says. Meta estimates that it shows its users 15 billion scam ads like this one every day. (Reuters) According to Meta spokesperson Andy Stone, these documents "present a selective view that distorts Meta's approach to fraud and scams".  » Read More

‘We found out on Facebook‘| Families stunned after charges dropped in case tied to murders …

Prosecutors dropped charges against Myrta Romanos, accused of abusing a corpse and tampering with evidence in the 2023 murder of Savanah Soto and Matthew Guerra. SAN ANTONIO — A stunning turn in a case that’s haunted San Antonio for nearly two years. The woman accused of helping hide the bodies of 18-year-old Savanah Soto, her boyfriend Matthew Guerra, and their unborn son walked free Wednesday - after prosecutors dropped every charge against her during jury selection. Myrta Romanos, the stepmother of accused shooter Christopher Preciado, had faced charges of abuse of a corpse and two counts of tampering with evidence. But during jury selection Wednesday morning, the state abruptly filed motions to dismiss the charges for further investigation. The Bexar County District Attorney’s Office confirmed the dismissal, saying in a statement: “The case has been dismissed for further investigation. We cannot provide additional comment because the related cases are still pending.” For the victims’ families, the news came as a shock and a heartbreak. “We should have been notified from the DA’s office to better prep ourselves,” said Matthew’s father,  » Read More

NORRISTOWN — A Pottstown man who used Facebook to harass a New Hanover Township police officer on whom he was allegedly “fixated” is headed to jail. Andre L. Wilson, 51, of the 900 block of North Washington Street, was sentenced in Montgomery County Court to 4 to 12 months in the county jail on a misdemeanor charge of harassment in connection with the November 2024 incident. Reddit added to Australia’s teen social media ban due to start next month – BBC

Getty Images Reddit is one of the latest platforms to be added to Australia's social media ban Popular forum site Reddit has been added to Australia's world-first social media ban for children under 16 that starts next month. Live-streaming platform Kick will also be included, bringing the number of sites targeted in the ban to nine. They include Facebook, X, Snapchat, TikTok, YouTube, Instagram and Threads. From 10 December, tech companies can be fined up to A$50m ($32.5m; £25.7m) if they do not take "reasonable steps" to deactivate existing accounts for under-16s and prohibit new ones. Each banned platform was chosen as their "sole or a significant purpose is to enable online social interaction," the government said, and more sites may be added given the "fast-changing" nature of technology. "Delaying children's access to social media accounts gives them valuable time to learn and grow, free of the powerful, unseen forces of harmful and deceptive design features such as opaque algorithms and endless scroll," said Australia's eSafety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant.  » Read More
