Reddit added to Australia’s teen social media ban due to start next month – BBC

Getty Images Reddit is one of the latest platforms to be added to Australia's social media ban Popular forum site Reddit has been added to Australia's world-first social media ban for children under 16 that starts next month. Live-streaming platform Kick will also be included, bringing the number of sites targeted in the ban to nine. They include Facebook, X, Snapchat, TikTok, YouTube, Instagram and Threads. From 10 December, tech companies can be fined up to A$50m ($32.5m; £25.7m) if they do not take "reasonable steps" to deactivate existing accounts for under-16s and prohibit new ones. Each banned platform was chosen as their "sole or a significant purpose is to enable online social interaction," the government said, and more sites may be added given the "fast-changing" nature of technology. "Delaying children's access to social media accounts gives them valuable time to learn and grow, free of the powerful, unseen forces of harmful and deceptive design features such as opaque algorithms and endless scroll," said Australia's eSafety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant.  » Read More

Women over 50 in my Facebook group say these 10 perfumes ‘stop strangers in their tracks’

We have received compensation to create this article. Pricing and availability subject to change. Women over 50 in my Facebook group say these 10 perfumes 'stop strangers in their tracks' The women in my family have always loved their perfumes. My chic grandmother only wore Red Door by Elizabeth Arden, while my glamorous aunt was a lifelong Chanel No. 5 fan. Now that I'm a bit older, I understand how a signature scent can weave itself into your identity; a constant, even as the rest of your style evolves. The women in my over-50 Facebook group feel the same way. A single post about perfume sent thousands of ladies sprinting to the comments to brag about the scents that "stop strangers in their tracks" and earn them "so many compliments." Conveniently, many of their most-loved fragrances are available at QVC. While most of the ladies in my Facebook group prefer to splurge on luxury brands like Dolce & Gabbana and Givenchy,  » Read More

‘Heroic’ actions of train employee and driver saved many lives in England stabbing attack, police say

London  —  There were just 11 minutes between the moment British police received an emergency call about a stabbing on a train heading to London and the moment the suspect was arrested. Eleven victims were hospitalized in the attack, including one railway worker who is in critical but stable condition, according to authorities. Officials have said the casualties would have been far worse if not for the actions of the driver who arranged for the train to be diverted to a nearby station, and a “heroic” railway worker who tried to stop the attacker on the train. The high-speed London North Eastern Railway (LNER) train, which was taking passengers from northern England to the British capital on Saturday evening, had just left Peterborough station in Cambridgeshire when the attack took place. The first emergency call to Cambridgeshire police was at approximately 7:39 p.m. local time. By 7:50 p.m., officers had arrested the 32-year-old British suspect on the platform at Huntingdon station, police told CNN. The train had just left Peterborough station when the stabbing took place and made an unscheduled stop at Huntingdon.  » Read More
