Berkeley Talks: Art is a ‘strange tool’ that reveals us to ourselves

"Life and art are entangled," says UC Berkeley philosopher Alva Noë. "Art works us over, art makes us new. Art makes us." By Public Affairs September 19, 2025 In his 2023 book The Entanglement , UC Berkeley philosopher Alva Noë argues that human nature is not a fixed phenomenon, and that art acts as a kind of “strange tool” that actively changes us.  “Life and art are entangled,” says Noë, who spoke about his research at a Berkeley event in June 2023. “To say that life and art are entangled is to say not only that we make art out of life, all the habits and systems and meanings and certainties, but that art then works these raw materials over — art works us over, art makes us new. Art makes us.” When we take an everyday object, like a photo, out of its normal setting and hang it in a new place, like an art gallery, it allows us to “reflect on everything our ordinary lives with pictures conceals,” says UC Berkeley philosopher Alva Noë.  » Read More

Northampton County Council condemns political violence after uproar over Charlie Kirk …

EASTON, Pa. — Northampton County Council on Thursday formally condemned political violence and called for civility after residents denounced Councilwoman Kelly Keegan over a social media post about slain conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Keegan, who also is a nurse supervisor for Easton Area School District, sparked backlash for Facebook comments attributed to her about Kirk, who was assassinated during an event in Utah. In at least one Facebook post, she allegedly wrote that Kirk was “a monster” and that “his wife and kids are better off without him, as is the rest of the world. Hopefully her next partner will respect women and children.” County council unanimously approved a resolution condemning political violence and calling for civility after many residents in a packed meeting called for unity amid political divisiveness following Kirk's death. The residents also expressed dismay for Keegan's alleged words that they said contributed to the growing divide. Above all, most speakers pressed council to call for Keegan's resignation or impose consequences. Others also said they believe Easton Area School Board should fire Keegan and for the state Board of Nursing to revoke her license.  » Read More

Facebook users begin receiving payments from privacy settlement – WGME

PORTLAND, Maine (WGME) — Facebook users are starting to receive payments this week as part of a multi-million dollar settlement related to a user privacy scandal. Concerns arose that the payments might be a scam, but the settlement is legitimate. The settlement stems from multiple lawsuits filed against Facebook following the 2016 election. The social media giant was accused of allowing user information to be accessed by third parties without permission, including the firm Cambridge Analytica. The settlement was finalized in May. Approved recipients will receive an email a few days before the money is issued. The email will come from an address related to "Facebook Consumer Privacy Settlement." It is expected to take about 10 weeks for all payments to be distributed.  » Read More

Ambler official resigns after controversial Facebook post after murder of Charlie Kirk – 6ABC

AMBLER, Pa. (WPVI) -- A Montgomery County Democratic official has resigned from one of her positions after her social media comments set off a wave of response. Ambler Tax Collector Jennifer Stomsky made comments pointed at her own Democratic Party after the murder of political activist Charlie Kirk. One expert says situations like this have been unfolding across the country. "Obviously America is polarized, probably more polarized than any time in my lifetime," said Chris Satullo, director of the "Can we Talk?" program, which is operated by the non-partisan, nonprofit Committee of 70. America has seen political tensions escalate by violent acts, but speaking in the aftermath of those acts can have its own political consequences. Stomsky's now-deleted post calls on people in her own Democratic party to "get a expletive spine." The post went on to say, "I'm so tired of being told that violence isn't the answer.... History is filled with blood." Replying to a commenter on her post, Stomsky wrote, "Let's make some more martyrs." "I think when people start thinking about that,  » Read More

BERNVILLE, Pa. - Bernville mayor Shawn Raup-Konsavage is once again in the spotlight for comments on his social media page after Charlie Kirk's assassination. The post read: "This is what MAGA represents, This is what Trump lowered flags for. If this represents you then I don't want to hear that you are offended that I'm glad he is gone" and included a clip of Kirk. The post has gained a lot of attention online. This isn't the first time he made a controversial post. After the assassination attempt of President Trump in western Pennsylvania in July of 2024, he posted "Try harder." "That Trump post that he had posted there was a lot of controversy with that in this town, a lot of hatred towards him after that," said Mark Rodriguez, who lives in Bernville. This latest post drew mixed reactions. "He said what he wanted to on his own Facebook page which is freedom of speech and all that, but I certainly don't agree with it and I think what he said was terrible," said Bernville council vice president Wayne Lesher.  » Read More
