Americans are putting more money into 401(k)s this year—see how you compare – CNBC

Despite the stock market's poor performance since the beginning of the year, Americans have increased contributions to their 401(k) retirement accounts over the course of 2022, according to a recently published Fidelity study. The S&P 500 dropped by about 5% in the last quarter, and that was reflected in a lowered average 401(k) balance of $121,700 — a 7% decrease from the previous quarter. But those poor returns didn't stop workers from increasing their 401(k) contributions by 0.1% in the first quarter of 2022. On average, Fidelity said, U.S. workers are now contributing 14% of their paychecks to those retirement accounts. That's the highest savings rate recorded since Fidelity started tracking the metric in 2010, and just below Fidelity's recommended rate of 15%."While the market's performance does impact account balances in the near term, the majority of retirement savers continued to demonstrate positive savings behavior," Kevin Barry, president of Workplace Investing at Fidelity Investments, wrote in a statement accompanying the findings.Fidelity's overall average 401(k) account balance may be an imperfect point of comparison for you — it includes accounts of all age groups, from entry-level employees to late-career corporate executives. Here's a more filtered breakdown, according to Fidelity data obtained by CNBC Make It:Age…

Caltrain Electrification Project Faces Budget Shortfall | Planetizen News

The agency is seeking an additional $260 million to complete electrification of train lines between San Francisco and San Jose. As Benjamin Schneider reports in the San Francisco Examiner, “Caltrain is on the cusp of completing its most significant upgrade since the rail line debuted in 1863. By converting its power source from fossil fuels to electricity, trains travelling between San Francisco and San Jose will be faster, more frequent and far less polluting.” But the agency needs an additional $260 million to finish the project by the target 2024 completion date. “The project, which also includes a new signal system and other improvements, was originally budgeted for $1.9 billion, but costs ballooned to about $2.4 billion. The $462 million shortfall was partly the result of pandemic disruption, cost increases and unexpected construction issues along the nearly 160-year-old railway.” The project also had to replace its signal system to comply with federal and state standards. To secure the needed funding, “The agency’s best hope is at the state level where several Bay Area legislators have proposed a bill, AB 2197, that would appropriate $260 million to the project from the general fund.” According to the article, electric trains will have…

This 5-minute email hack can help you stand out in the job search—here's how – CNBC

Recruiters often receive hundreds, if not thousands, of applications for a job listing — and whether you're submitting the same resume for the 50th time or spent an hour crafting the perfect cover letter, there's no guarantee someone will look at your application, or invite you to an interview, after you hit "submit."But there's a surefire way to stand out in the job search, a step that most candidates forget to do after they send in their application, Jeff Hyman, the CEO of Recruit Rockstars, tells CNBC Make It: following up with a company's hiring manager, or recruiter, over email. "It takes a little bit of confidence and research, but it works better than any technique that I've seen in getting a hiring manager's attention," he says. "As a hiring manager, when I get a note like that — which is rare — I always read it."Before sending an email to the hiring manager or your would-be boss, however, it's important to double-check the instructions on the job posting, Paul McDonald, senior executive director for Robert Half, says. "Some organizations will say, 'Do not contact us,'" he adds, but nine times out of ten, it's a smart job search tactic that…
