A bank restructures, and the marketers who once drove physical account openings are now less central because everything is done through mobile apps. Newspapers that once had large print teams now prioritise digital content. Even administrative roles are shrinking as HR systems and automation take over routine work. It doesn’t mean the people in those roles lacked competence. The business moved. The real lesson is this: roles can disappear, but capability must continue to evolve. Reading time: two minutes Broad participation is more important than “star performers” when it comes to improving a firm’s LinkedIn performance, according to a report by TBD Marketing. The research highlighted the growing role that lawyers and staff at all levels play in shaping law firms’ online visibility, with firms such as Hogan Lovells and Ashurst LLP among top performers. Researchers assessed LinkedIn social media maturity across four dimensions in their first ‘social media barometer’ for law firms, including: a ‘firm score’, based on followers and engagements per employee; an ‘influencers score’, reflecting the number of lawyers and staff in TBD’s top 1,000 legal LinkedIn influencers; a ‘social army score’, measuring the number of lawyers and staff posting on LinkedIn; and a ‘leadership score’, informed by the posts of senior and managing partners. Using this framework, City law firms claimed the top three spots in the rankings, with Hogan Lovells topping the leaderboard, showing “consistent engagement rather than reliance on a small number of standout individuals”. Ashurst, which came second, was recognised for its leadership visibility, and Bird & Bird, which came third, performed “strongly across the board”. An Indian-origin man has deleted his social media profiles after a video of him dancing at the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C., sparked widespread outrage. The reel, filmed at the site dedicated to millions of fallen soldiers, drew such fierce backlash that the individual has since deactivated both his LinkedIn and Instagram accounts. It all started with a video shared by TikTok user @madhu_raju_ (Who used the same name for his Instagram profile). The video shows him and a woman performing the popular “Don’t Rush Challenge” in front of the memorial. What followed was a massive criticism, with people questioning the choice of location. Though the original video has been deleted, it is now circulating on social media platforms, especially X. In late January of 2025, I posted a piece on LinkedIn called  FEMA Truth . I hit publish, closed my laptop, and went about my day. Within hours my phone began lighting up. Notifications stacked on notifications. Likes, reposts, thoughtful comments. Direct messages from people I had never met. My profile views spiked. Professionals across the country were engaging in a serious conversation about the future of our field. In the end,  267 reactions, 61 comments, 75 reposts, 48.707 impressions, 128 profile views, 44 new followers.   It felt great.   It was also humbling. Because most of my posts do not do that.   Last week I posted what I thought was a meaningful piece from the  Survivor’s Perspective .  Something we do not consider enough.   6 reactions, 0 comments, 1 repost, 175 impressions, 1 profile view.   Most of my posts, like most posts from emergency managers, receive modest engagement. A handful of likes. Maybe one comment. Then they quietly disappear down the feed.   The difference is rarely luck. It is usually content, design, timing, and intentional engagement. My organizational strategies as a freelancer are not particularly modern or meticulous. I just list all of my assignments — including their fees and deadlines — in a Google spreadsheet. I keep a messy, running list of story ideas in a Google doc, and file all rejected or ignored pitches in yet another Google doc, where they rest until they find the right home. (This post is not sponsored by Google.)  I also use my Notes app as host to my ongoing to-do list, to flag which sources I’ve reached out to and when, and to contain what I call “scraps” — pieces of story drafts I’ve demoted to the cutting room floor.  That’s pretty much it: I don’t have separate work and life email addresses (let alone email filters and folders), don’t consolidate transcripts and drafts for each story in any sort of logical way (the search function suffices), and it works for me, for now.  But some freelancers want, need or thrive on more intricate systems, and there are increasingly more clever tools out there that deliver them.
