A recent study, Empty Vessels Make the Most Noise, finds LinkedIn’s loudest financial voices are often the least reliable. People who talk big perform poorly; profiles bloated with upbeat, self-congratulatory language are associated with poorer forecasts. This isn’t mere overconfidence. The researchers say the high tone reflects deliberate impression management, a way for less able analysts to stay visible in a crowded market. Depressingly, the tactic works. Authorities are investigating a "concerning" data leak that has resulted in the public release of dozens of high-profile phone numbers, including Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Opposition leader Sussan Ley. The information was allegedly obtained by a third-party data site using artificial intelligence to scrape sites, including social media profiles, for user details. Senior U.S. District Judge Edward Davila ruled that it is plausible that consumers had no idea how much of their private medical data was being collected by LinkedIn's tracking software and that the company's data practices could constitute a "highly offensive" intrusion into their privacy. "Given the nature of LinkedIn's alleged conduct and the sensitivity of the information shared here, the court finds this issue is inappropriate to resolve at the pleadings stage," Davila wrote.
