STARGATE project to 3D print metallic space propulsion components on the ISS

by Laura Griffiths 16 July 2025 13:56 A project from the European Space Agency (ESA), Airbus Defence and Space, and German Aerospace Center (DLR) is attempting a 3D printing first for space. The STARGATE project aims to additively manufacture functional metal space propulsion components on board the International Space Station. The first part, a 1-Newton thruster developed by DLR, will be printed and returned to Earth for hot-fire testing, in what DLR has described as ‘a game-changer for additive manufacturing in space, unlocking new frontiers for exploration.’ If successful, it will be the first fully functional spacecraft component, built in space and used directly in orbit.  According to a post on LinkedIn, STARGATE, which officially launched at the 4th Workshop for Advanced Manufacturing at ESA ESTEC on July 8th, will study how microgravity influences the printing process and material properties. Juri Munk, Researcher at DLR recently shared how the centre is researching metal AM for deployment in aircraft engines and rocket propulsion systems, and teased this latest development with the ESA. Munk said, “Our goal is to manufacture a small metallic thruster suitable for in-space operation, directly in orbit. We will return the thruster back to Earth and subject it to

Card and chocolates with appreciation: Unexpected perks of covering sports – Revsportz

A Thank you card from Jaynil, an avid viewer, follower of Revsportz. Image Revsportz Boria Majumdar in London There are moments that kind of make you feel that all this hard work is worth it. We generally do our post-day live shows from the park opposite the Danubius hotel. The Internet reception is really nice there. Yesterday also, the routine was the same. I had reached early while Gargi joined me a couple of minutes later. In that little time, a young man walked up to me and called out my name. He looked familiar, but I couldn’t really place him. That’s when he said, “Boria sir, recognise me? Met you at the MCG outside Gate 3 during the Boxing Day Test. My name is Jaynil”. And it all came back to me. When this leaked (thanks to Business Insider), public pressure forced them to change their policy—proof that brand trust is fragile in this game. The real story: AI is great for marketing and product launches, but when it comes to hiring, even top labs want to see the human behind the resume. No one truly trusts “AI everywhere” just yet—especially not when it’s about finding genuine talent versus “prompt engineering.” This is the reality check: as long as AI writes applications for candidates, companies aren’t ready to trust their future to machines alone. > "AI hype is great for presentations, but when it comes to real filters—people still want
