YouTube Tests New 'Engagement Graph' Insights on Videos, Adds New Member …

YouTube’s looking to help viewers find the most engaging elements of video clips, while it’s also launching a new feature to acknowledge long-term subscribers during live-streams. First off, on engagement insights - as you can see in this example, YouTube’s new ‘Engagement Graph’, which is currently being tested with a small percentage of mobile and desktop users, will show peaks and troughs in engagement activity when you scrub through the clip. As explained by YouTube: “We’re experimenting with showing viewers a signal to help them quickly see which parts of a video may be interesting. If you’re in this experiment, you’ll see a graph above the red progress bar while scrubbing - if the graph is high, it means that part of the video has been frequently re-watched.” It’s not the first platform to experiment with engagement insights to guide viewer behavior, with Facebook testing the same for live videos back in 2016. The difference, in that case, is that Facebook also used Reactions and comments as a signal, which YouTube, based on the above description, is not. That could make it a more direct measure of content activity, and help to guide engagement based on direct interest, as opposed…

Watch: Animated Short 'Ten, Twenty, Thirty, Forty, Fifty Miles a Day' | FirstShowing.net

by Alex Billington October 6, 2021Source: Vimeo "A slug doesn't move any faster than a peeing scout." How's that for an opener? Here's another gorgeous looking hand-made short film to enjoy. Ten, Twenty, Thirty, Forty, Fifty Miles a Day is an animated short made by Belgian animation filmmaker Mathieu Georis. It won the the Vimeo Staff Pick Award at the 2021 Ottawa International Animation Festival just recently, and is being featured on Vimeo's site. The short is about the time when Mathieu was in the Boy Scouts and couldn't pee in front of the other boys. It's a tale about a slug and a scout. "Using an arduous, but gorgeous glass painting technique, Georis juxtaposes a personal story of his time in the Boy Scouts against evocative monochrome colors to build place, time, and subtext." The original French title is Un Kilomètre à Pied, which translates directly to One Kilometer on Foot. Ha. The colors in this are stunning, and the animation makes it more than worth 10 mins of your time. Thanks to Vimeo Staff Picks for the tip on this one. The very short introduction via Vimeo: "A slug doesn't move any faster than a peeing scout." Un…

Trying to Untangle the Princeton Architecture Department Drama – Curbed

A still from Alejandro Zaera-Polo’s multipart video series. Photo: Alejandro Zaera-Polo/Vimeo An architecture professor said he has been dismissed from Princeton University after a long investigation, and so has published a multimedia polemic mostly about himself but also, he writes, about the downfall of American academia. It is an extremely pure example of low-stakes-yet-high-drama academic-workplace nightmares. “I write these lines from the academic epicenter of the culture of cancellation and ‘woke’ thinking, Princeton University,” Alejandro Zaera-Polo’s tale begins, in a document named “The Fascisms of Difference in the Post-truth University.” His text polemic is accompanied by nearly five hours of videos, posted on Vimeo over the last few weeks, called “The Gonzo Ethnography of Academic Authority.” The videos incorporate diagrams and many internal documents, and they are incredible. Episode one moves from Nietzsche to Latour and then quickly begins to trash the school’s faculty, starting with Elizabeth Diller, who, in addition to teaching at Princeton, is a principal of Diller Scofidio + Renfro. “The ethnography is aimed to capture an extreme case of the malaises that affect universities in 2021,” he writes in the text. Those malaises include the institution’s capture by the “financial-informational-media-educational complex that today constitutes the center…

Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen: Lawyer John Tye says there's 'more to come'

“There’s more to come,” Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen’s lawyer said Wednesday during a Washington Post Live event, signaling that much of the information she obtained from the tech giant has not yet been made public and the scandal is still unfolding.“It’s obviously pretty substantial, and there’s been a lot of elements that haven’t even been reported yet, so there’s more to come,” John Tye, a former U.S. government whistleblower who is representing Haugen, told The Post’s Cat Zakrzewski during the virtual event. What Haugen’s revelations say about Facebook’s role in the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol in particular “deserves more attention,” Tye later said.Story continues below advertisementHer disclosures that Facebook’s internal research found its products cause harm in ways the platform has failed to meaningfully address has ushered in a reckoning over the company’s conduct. Facebook Stock's Familiar Crisis Cycle: Decline, Rebound, Repeat – Yahoo Finance

Outrage at Lorde and the Mongrel Mob shows we're losing our ability to see two sides of an issue

On Tumblr, Lorde, old poetry and the Mongrel Mob, columnist Glenn McConnell reflects on a divided nation.OPINION: Very few people can be labelled either good or evil. The 2010s saw an old poem by Walt Whitman take off on social media. The website Tumblr, urged by alt stars like Lana Del Rey, fell in love with the old essayist and journalist who died in 1892. He was a white American, who the history books say enjoyed sunbathing naked. His work, Song of Myself, was repeated to no end, especially the line “Very well then I contradict myself, I am large, I contain multitudes.”123RFWalt Whitman, 1819-1892, was an American poet, essayist, and journalist. To me, that phrase spoke to intellectual curiosity and an acceptance that, well, nothing’s perfect. No one political ideology is watertight and even our best-held beliefs should be malleable. It acknowledges that our views can often contradict themselves, therefore we should be open to hearing the thoughts and experiences of others.
