Nikita Tomar murder protests: Men on WhatsApp groups that spread hate speech, says police

Written by Sakshi Dayal | Gurgaon | November 4, 2020 1:44:22 am Family and friends of the victim Nikita Tomar (left) staged a protest on the Ballabhgarh-Sohna road, Tuesday. (ANI)Several of the 32 accused arrested by Faridabad Police — after a protest seeking justice for the 20-year-old woman shot dead outside her college last week turned violent — were members of WhatsApp groups where “inflammatory messages” were being sent. “Phone data of the accused showed they were part of some WhatsApp groups where hate speech was being spread and inflammatory messages that instigated violence were being sent. We are identifying all anti-social elements who have indulged in these groups and are preparing a list. Action will be taken against them as per law,” said Adarshdeep Singh, ACP (Old Faridabad). “We are also keeping an eye on other social media platforms, including Facebook and Instagram. Action will be taken against anyone spreading hate speech or sending inflammatory messages on these as well,” he said. Police said all 32 men arrested are “misguided youth” who came to the protests after seeing posts on social media. No links have emerged between them and any political parties so far, said officials. The protest took place on Sunday when a group of people who were part of a mahapanchayat being held to seek justice for the victim, Nikita Tomar, attempted to block NH-2. “Around 200” people from the crowd allegedly pelted stones at police officials who tried to stop them, leaving 10 personnel injured. Thirty-two people were arrested following the incident, of whom 29 have been produced in court and remanded to judicial custody. The remaining three have been placed in isolation after they tested positive for Covid Monday. An advisory was also issued for all those involved in the mahapanchayat and protest to follow…

LinkedIn Adds New Resource Hub to Provide Support for Underrepresented Groups

With the COVID-19 pandemic adding more challenges for underrepresented groups, LinkedIn has launched a new resource hub which includes a range of resources and guides to help provide more support for individuals and organizations. As explained by LinkedIn: "We believe that diversity, inclusion, and belonging can unlock an employee’s full potential - no matter their background. Together, we can focus on giving underrepresented groups an equal chance to build careers." The hub includes links to platform functions and best practice guides, as well as information on its 'All In' diversity and inclusion program. There are also LinkedIn Learning courses to consider, as well as a listing of LinkedIn's diversity, inclusion, and belonging partners. The initiative is part of LinkedIn's broader focus on creating economic opportunity for every member of the global workforce. Earlier this year, former LinkedIn CEO Jeff Weiner announced that he would be standing aside from the role in order to shift his attention to how the platform can connect more people with relevant opportunities. Using its unmatched professional dataset and network, Weiner is focused on finding new ways to use LinkedIn to broaden connection, which could help people of all backgrounds find the right role for them, even if they lack the personal connections that are often the key pathways to such positions. Inclusion is another element of this approach, in ensuring that all people can find the right career. It's an ambitious goal, with various challenges to address, but LinkedIn has already introduced several initiatives along this line. And with the COVID-19 pandemic causing even greater economic division, such efforts could play an increasingly important role in the eventual recovery. As more people look to find new roles, and adapt to the changing professional landscape, it's important that nobody is left behind, and LinkedIn is looking to play its…

Police: Fontana Man Posed As 16-Year-Old Boy To Talk To Teen Girls On Snapchat, Kik, Tik Tok

FONTANA (CBSLA) — Police say a Fontana man arrested on suspicion of possessing child pornography has been posing as a 16-year-old boy to talk to underage girls on several social media outlets. (credit: Fontana Police Department) Edgar Carrizalez, 27, was arrested on Oct. 28 after Fontana’s Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force was notified by authorities in Grapevine, Texas that they were investigating a case involving a 12-year-old girl who had been contacted on Snapchat and was sent an unsolicited, vulgar sexual photo. The investigation led to Carrizalez, who was arrested at his home in the 9300 block of Kempster Avenue in Fontana. A parole search uncovered child pornography on his electronic devices, and evidence that Carrizalez had been posing as a 16-year-old boy in order to communicate with teens on social media platforms, including Snapchat, Kik, Tik Tok, Discord, Frog What’s Up Friend, and Spotafriend Meet Teens App, according to Fontana police. Investigators say Carrizalez would often use the screen names Kekid45 and Kyleyou1 on these platforms. Carrizalez is being held without bail. Snapchat now lets creators show off their subscriber counts

Snapchat is now allowing creators to publicize how many subscribers they have. This is the first time Snapchat has given its users any sort of public-facing metric about their followings or audiences, and it represents a substantial change to the platform, as first reported by Tubefilter. In a statement to The Verge, a Snap spokesperson said: “We’ve listened to feedback from our creator community and many of them expressed interest in having the option to show that their community on Snapchat is growing,” which is why it’s making subscriber counts visible. Creators can decide to turn this feature on or off from their settings. The company introduced creator profiles in September, which gives users on the platform more insights on their audience and helps them coordinate with brands. The fact that Snap’s saying its creators wanted to show off their growing community with public subscriber counts, suggests that they want a public-facing metric to demonstrate how successful they are for brands. On Instagram, for example, brands often look at follower counts and engagement rates to gauge how big a creator is on the platform. On Snapchat, brands would have had to ask creators to share those details before committing to a deal. Making those metrics public streamlines that conversation and helps creators and brands determine whether a deal might work between them. This then could lead to Snapchat becoming an overall more creator-friendly platform where more influencers see an opportunity for business.
