Allow me to elaborate. In 1998, I exited a small software company I had helped found and went to work for a major enterprise-wide software giant with offices all over the world. I found the job in a local paper. The ad had a phone number to call, which I did. I was shocked to be put through to the practice director doing the hiring. After a nice chat, he asked me to send my resume, which I also did. Soon after, I got a call to come in and interview, and he hired me on the spot. I started with them and worked for four years until I got laid off after 9/11. The point of all this is that job searches were much different than today even just 22 years ago. We sometimes lose sight of the changes wrought by the internet. In the ensuing years, online job boards have dominated the hiring process. Today there are more than 40,000 of them, ranging from very small to humongous. Unfortunately, only about 20% of companies actually use the big public boards like Indeed, Monster, Glass Door, etc.; 80% of executive positions are either found on the private boards, which are accessible only to the hiring and placement communities, company websites and LinkedIn. Even if you do have access to these various “insider” boards, it’s not enough. The average call-back rate on resumes submitted to major employers is only about 3%. Facebook fed inaccurate information to local advertisers for more than a year and is being forced to repay them, casting further doubt over the accuracy of the way the US tech platform collects data.The tech giant, which has been criticised several times in the last few years over the reliability of its data, is giving free "credits" to multiple local advertisers after it realised it was miscalculating metrics such as the amount of people clicking on an ad on Facebook's app or how much users prefer one advertiser over another.Facebook informed advertisers last week it had miscalculated data.Credit:APIndustry sources who spoke on the condition of anonymity said Facebook had apologised to some advertisers and media buying agencies in Australia. The advertisers are being offered one-off make-goods - the opportunity to advertise for free - if they were significantly affected. A Facebook spokeswoman claimed it had affected 0.1 per cent of the local advertising market, but multiple industry sources said that a number of companies across large advertising agencies were affected. The scale of impact is dependent on what the tool was used for.The inaccurate data was provided to advertisers through a free "conversion lift tool". The tool helps users understand the effectiveness of their advertisements and some may adjust spend based on the data provided. The global tech giant told affected advertisers the metric was undercounted between August 15, 2019 and August 31, 2020, citing a code error for the mistake."While making improvements to our measurement products, we found a technical issue that impacted some conversion lift tests," Facebook director Paul McCrory said.Facebook and rival Google have the largest share of the local advertising market. National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC), a children’s charity network said that Facebook significantly fails in its responsibility of removing self-harming content. Facebook’s internal record revealed that between April and June of 2020, the removal of self-harm content and suicidal material has been reduced by 80 percent comparatively last quarter. During Covid-19, due to the restrictions made by the government most of the content moderators were not allowed to leave their homes. Facebook claimed that their priority is to remove the self-harming material. On Thursday, figures were released that showed the uplifting of restrictions made by Instagram on self-harming post and the moderators began going back to work, the number of removals went back up before the pandemic. Tara Hopkins, Chief of Public Policy for Instagram, in a statement, said: “to provide a safe platform on Instagram for users we are trying to do our best and we can confirm that from July to September we took a stand and removed 1.3 million portions of suicide and self-harm content, over 95 percent of which we found proactively.” Adding further, "We've been transparent about the effect of Covid-19 on our content-review capabilities, so we're confident about these latest figures that indicate we're now taking a stand even on more content, thanks to our improved technology."She added, "We are working closely with experts to improve our policies, and we are talking with regulators and governments on how we can expand more of our technology to UK and EU so that we can promptly locate and eradicate harmful suicidal and self-harming posts.” After the tragic incident of a teenager Molly Russell, Facebook pledged to take down more images, photographs, and even cartoons depicting self-harm and suicide.The NSPCC, however, noted that after the reductions in the takedowns, youngsters are even…
