PSA: The Darkwing Duck DuckTales Special Is Streaming for Free on YouTube

Darkwing Duck, causing problems. Just like old times. Image: Disney XDThe terror that flaps in the night is a perfect companion for Halloween viewing. Even if he’s not really that scary. As you might know, DuckTales recently aired, as part of its latest season, a forty-five minute Darkwing Duck special that spends a lot of time in the purple superhero’s world. It introduces a lot of important elements of the character and maybe inches us closer to the standalone series he clearly deserves. Most importantly, it introduces Gosalyn Mallard, the hero’s erstwhile sidekick/conscience and, let’s be real, the real hero of Darkwing Duck’s ensemble. Now the whole special is available for free on YouTube. It’s a good special, too, drawing everyone into a multi-dimensional supervillain conspiracy. Which is, honestly, pretty ambitious for a cameo episode. Definitely check it out, and don’t forget to admire that wide-brimmed hat Darkwing is wearing. That hat is iconic, folks. Don’t you forget. DuckTales airs on Disney XD. For more, make sure you’re following us on our Instagram @io9dotcom.G/O Media may get a commission Read More

Facebook and Instagram made missteps on Nigeria's EndSARS protest while Twitter boosted it

The two and a half week-long #EndSARS protests in Nigeria against police brutality has garnered attention and raised awareness far beyond the country’s borders thanks to a savvy, well-planned out campaign boosted by Nigerian and global celebrities. But none of this would have been possible without the sheer reach and immediacy of major social media platforms. The peaceful protest started online using the #EndSars hashtag before spreading quickly to thousands of people joining protests on the streets of Nigeria’s big cities and then London, Toronto, Houston, and elsewhere, again thanks to social media. But all social media is not created equal. The campaign to shut down the controversial and brutal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) thrived on Twitter in particular and a series of significant #EndSARS hashtags trended globally with millions of retweets. Even Twitter’s enigmatic founder Jack Dorsey joined young Nigerians in encouraging the global Twitter community to donate to the protest organizers using bitcoin.Twitter gave the EndSARS hashtag an official emoji and verified the Twitter accounts of several users at the forefront of the protest.  » Read More

This act of support contributed to the global credibility of the protest and boosted the movement both online and offline. But even as the hashtag picked up steam and was shared by the likes of Kanye West and Rihanna, over on Facebook and Instagram some of the posts with the #EndSARS hashtag were being incorrectly labeled as “fake news.”To make things worse, these “fake news” labels by Facebook and Instagram inadvertently helped to promote a self-serving, anti-fake news campaign by the Nigerian Army, which had come under intense scrutiny after men in military uniforms opened fire on unarmed, peaceful protestors at the Lekki Toll Gate in Lagos on Tuesday (Oct. 20). The Nigerian Army has claimed its soldiers were not involved in what some have labeled a “massacre”...

Spitting Image: Watch New Episodes for Free on YouTube Right Now

Spitting Image is back! The mercilessly vicious puppet show from 1980s British television has been revived for the 21st Century, specifically the Trump era, the Brexit era, the Big Tech era, and the Social Media era. And it's on YouTube! Yes, that's right… YouTube!"Spitting Image" key art, BritboxAvailable only on the Britbox streaming service, the new episodes are now available a few days after the broadcast to stream on the official Spitting Image YouTube Channel. As of this writing, all four episodes to date are available. The 4th episode feels like the show is comfortably settling in its stride.Just like in the 80s, the Fluck & Law show has no sacred cows. Spitting Image creates grotesque puppets of public figures and absolutely refuses to pander or flatter any of them. Unlike American Comedy, it has no desire to be loved. It wants you to hate these public figures for their hubris, ego, and outright evil. Those of us who grew up in Britain in the 1980s remember how it managed to permanently tar the public images of certain politicians. As Alan Moore said previously, satire is a kind of magical spell that can destroy a man's image forever. The show is an act of cultural assassination. It fires its bullets indiscriminately in all directions in that fine old British tradition of satirical contempt.Spitting Image 2020 has new puppets of real-life figures to skewer: Donald Trump, Boris Johnson, and their respective hairpieces, Mike Pence is grey-skinned and forgettable, British Home Secretary Priti Patel is a vampire, Jared Kushner is a literal lifeless stiff, Melania Trump sleeps in a coffin, the Coronavirus is a recurring character who has affairs with both Trump and Boris. New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Arden is a steely, hippy Mary Poppins. Boris Johnson's adviser-cum-guru Dominic Cummings, hilariously described...

This Week in Apps: Quibi dies, Snapchat soars, Halide upgrades for iPhone 12

Welcome back to This Week in Apps, the TechCrunch series that recaps the latest OS news, the applications they support and the money that flows through it all. The app industry is as hot as ever, with a record 204 billion downloads and $120 billion in consumer spending in 2019. People are now spending three hours and 40 minutes per day using apps, rivaling TV. Apps aren’t just a way to pass idle hours — they’re a big business. In 2019, mobile-first companies had a combined $544 billion valuation, 6.5x higher than those without a mobile focus. Quibi dies…and no one was surprised There was so much wrong with Quibi’s premise that it’s sometimes hard to even know where to start. But at the core, its problem was that it fundamentally misunderstood how, when and why users would watch video on their phones. The company’s thinking was that you could fund high-production value content ($100K/minute, yikes) then chop it up into smaller “bites,” add a technology layer, then call this a reinvention of cinema. The reality is there was little demand for this sort of content, and it didn’t fit with how people want to be entertained on their phones. When people want to appreciate high-quality filmmaking (or even TV production), they tend to want a bigger screen — they’ve spent money for their fancy high-def or 4K TV, after all. Pre-COVID, they might even pay to go a movie theater. On mobile, the production value of content is far less of a concern, if it even registers. Quibi also misunderstood what users want to watch in terms of video on their phones when they have a few minutes to kill. By positioning its app in this space, it had to compete with numerous and powerful sources for “short-form” content — existing apps like YouTube, TikTok, Facebook (e.g....

LinkedIn ranks Provo as second most-confident city in the country based on workforce

According to LinkedIn and its workforce confidence index — which is based on workers’ job security, financial situation and career outlook — Provo was ranked as the second-most confident city in the country.George Anders, senior editor at large for LinkedIn, said, at the beginning of April, the company introduced its workforce confidence index during the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. The goal was to get a sense of how people felt about their immediate situation, their finances and their long-term career. The polls occurred every two weeks as time progressed through the COVID-19 pandemic. During that time, LinkedIn built a large sample, about 4,000 to 5,000 respondents each time, that allowed for precise data that could be divided by industry, age range and parts of the country. The data was originally split into the big six regions of the United States, but it was soon realized that several surveys could be combined to make for a massive number of respondents, allowing researchers to look into 62 different metropolitan areas.“The latest survey looks at the summer results, July through September, for these 62 metro areas and, boom, there you see Provo really high on the list,” Anders said.According to LinkedIn, areas in the top 10 of its workforce confidence index tended to benefit from population growth and logistics hubs, things that can be easily noticed in and around Utah County.Additionally, tech companies continue to move into Utah County, and those companies are becoming increasingly more comfortable with their remote working experiences. They are realizing that it is productive for their employees to telecommute, and if the workforce is OK, those companies could continue in that format indefinitely, according to LinkedIn.This all adds to that workforce confidence index, as well.“Provo is catching the rising wave in a lot of different ways,” Anders said. “We focused...
