From staff reports Spokane Public Schools boosted security Friday morning as a result of a threat on social media. “It was a very vague, generalized threat that is not specific to Spokane or Spokane schools,” said Ryan Lancaster, Spokane Public Schools spokesman. Even so, Lancaster said Spokane police and district security officers were performing extra patrols Friday morning. Local school district officials, including in Spokane and Mead, reported to parents they worked with law enforcement to investigate the threat, which appeared on Snapchat. Spokane police determined the threat was not credible, the Spokane district reported in an email to parents Friday afternoon. The Mead district reported that the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office made a similar determination. Spokane Public Schools asked students and parents to report suspicious activity or, if they know of anyone in an unsafe situation, to call or text (509) 354-7233 or email safeline@spokaneschools.org.

Redwood City police said they are prepared to respond to any threats after schools throughout California, Washington State and elsewhere received threats on social media platforms on Friday. The threats, which mainly came through Snapchat  and seemingly originated in Texas, was said to contain multiple typos and grammatical errors.  It read: "This Friday September 15th We will open fire on schools, we are taking some weapons, knifes and many things to start a disaster on schools, we are doing that on one of the schools on the North So be aware and plus we might also do it on the Homecoming party's on the 16th so just to let y'all know to be careful if you don't wanna get hurt, or else just don't come to school and stay home. Spread out this message to be aware or if you dont wannt get injured." LAWRENCE, Kan. — Court documents credit the keen ears of a Kansas middle school teacher who overheard students’ conversations, leading to a criminal investigation. “People are snapping or taking photos. Perpetrators are actually paying kids to take pictures of themselves,” Douglas County District Attorney Suzanne Valdez said. The kids they’re targeting are young, according to case recently filed case in Kansas where a suspect contacted girls over social media who were as young as 11 and 12 years old. An investigation uncovered illicit and disturbing messages from a 43-year-old Lawrence man who was carrying on conversations with the children. Court documents detail how the man reached out to Lawrence middle schoolers using the social media app Snapchat. Those same court records also say the suspect, 43-year-old Kenneth Soap, used money transfer apps like Cashapp and Venmo to pay multiple underage girls for explicit photos It’s a situation that a listening teacher uncovered, according to court documents. The Liberty Memorial Central Middle School teacher alerted a school resource officer about an overheard conversation that happened sometime in January. photo by: Wyandotte County Jail Kenneth Wayne Soap Last winter, as four pre-teen girls at Lawrence’s Liberty Memorial Central Middle School were discussing a man calling and sending them messages on Snapchat, a teacher happened to overhear them and alerted the school resource officer. That overheard conversation — about naked pictures and obscene solicitation to 11- and 12-year-olds — led to an investigation of a 43-year-old Lawrence man, which turned up even more disturbing allegations of illicit interactions with still more children, including the exchange of pornographic photos and videos for money and the man’s demands that the young girls call him “daddy.” These and other details are laid out in the affidavit supporting the arrest of Kenneth Wayne Soap, whose address at the time was listed on the Douglas County Jail booking log as the Lawrence Community Shelter. Soap was arrested on Aug. 19, as the Journal-World reported, in connection with a felony theft charge in Platte County, Missouri. He has now been charged with one count of aggravated human trafficking, two counts of sexual exploitation of a child, two counts of aggravated trading in child pornography and one count of sexual extortion. All of the charges are felonies

BRIGHTON, Tenn. - A 14-year-old boy was arrested after making threats to shoot up a high school, according to Brighton, Tennessee Mayor Stephanie Chapman-Washman. A press release distributed by the mayor said that school resources officers at Brighton High School were made aware of a Snapchat post where threats were made to "shoot up the school". Authorities identified the person who shared that post as a 14-year-old Brighton High School student from Atoka, the mayor said. After police interviewed the boy, he was arrested and charged with making a threat of mass violence on school property. The child was released to his parents and removed from school, according to the mayor.

MTV Partners with Snapchat for Voting in Video Music Awards MTV has partnered with Snapchat to let users vote for a Video Music Awards category through Lenses. The entertainment company is leveraging Snap’s Camera Kit to integrate AR-based experiences into the award show. Voting Through Snapchat Lens Users will be able to vote on the Best New Artist once the three finalists are decided.
