KUALA LUMPUR, May 22 (Reuters) - Malaysia will introduce new measures from June 1 to protect children and reduce their exposure to harmful content on online platforms, its communications regulator said on Friday. The new rules will require online service providers to include safeguards that limit account registration and ownership by users under the age of 16, as well as implement stronger content governance on their platforms, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission said in a statement. • The measures are aimed at providing age-appropriate protections and restrictions for high-risk features on online platforms, the commission said. • Online platform providers will be required to have “effective reporting and response mechanisms, advertiser verification measures and the labelling of manipulated content where appropriate,” the commission added. • A grace period will be provided for online platforms to implement the measures, the commission said, without specifying the duration. • Malaysia has in recent years stepped up scrutiny of social media companies after finding a sharp rise in harmful online content. A man who raped a 14-year-old girl after locking her in his Glasgow flat has been jailed for 10 years. Scott Ijomanta carried out the attack in Maryhill in August 2024 while on bail for trying to lure two other youngsters he had groomed online to his home. The 38-year-old - who pretended to be a 12-year-old on social media while looking for victims - gave the teenager his address and offered to pay for her taxi. But once she was inside the property he kept the key on him. Ijomanta was convicted at the High Court in Glasgow of abduction, assault and rape as well as sending sexual communications to a child. Judge Tom Hughes said his crimes were "totally and utterly unacceptable" and "could never be tolerated". Hughes told the court that Ijomanta, who refused to stand up in the dock while being sentenced, put the children in a "very difficult situation". He added: "I can only hope, in due course, that they will be able to move on with their lives and put all this behind them." A Potter County grad jury indicted Davion Dajohn Woods, 18, on one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. According to court records obtained by ABC 7 News, Woods fired multiple shots at 811 S. Mississippi Street around 10 p.m. on April 3. The homeowner told police he thought the shots game from across the street. According to court records, Woods posted a video of him shooting the house on Snapchat with the caption "Who's Next?" In the video. you can see the gun, the victim's house, and the location of the shooting where police found six, .45-caliber shell casings. FARGO, N.D. (Valley News Live) - A Fargo man is accused of using Snapchat to get three girls under 10 to send him sexually explicit photos and videos. Devon Shealy is facing 3 counts of promoting or directing an obscene sexual performance by a minor, 1 count of luring minors by computer, and 1 count of possession of certain materials prohibited. Devon Shealy (Cass County Jail) Documents say the case began March 12, when an Iowa mother told police she found sexual images on her 8 year-old daughter’s phone that had been sent to a contact saved as “daddy.” The mother states similar images were found on the girl’s twin sister’s phone, sent to someone named “Jase.” Detectives later identified a 9-year-old, who said she had sent explicit images to someone on Snapchat using the name “tim_horton2026,” believing he was a 14-year-old boy from Minnesota. Investigators say the Snapchat user pushed the girls to perform sexual acts on camera and send them to him. According to documents, Iowa detectives traced a phone number linked to the messages to Shealy. Documents say on May 18, Fargo officers and federal agents searched Shealy and his apartment, and seized two phones. During this

As part of its enforcement, the Federal Trade Commission has launched TakeItDown.ftc.gov, a website allowing victims and survivors to submit complaints about platforms that have failed to act on valid requests for the removal of non-consensual intimate images. The website also accepts complaints about platforms that have failed to create a process for people to request removal of the images. “Thanks to first lady Melania Trump’s dedication, the public, especially children, will have recourse against digital exploitation and extortion,” FTC Chairman Andrew N. Another state has joined the growing legal action against Roblox. Oklahoma announced on Thursday that it has filed a lawsuit against the massively popular gaming site, claiming that it has evolved into a “hunting ground for child predators.” “Roblox marketed itself as a safe place for children but turned a blind eye as predators targeted and exploited minors on its platform,” Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond said in a statement. “It failed to implement adequate safeguards, failed to protect young users and failed to be honest with parents about the risks.” Hundreds of millions of people use Roblox every month, and much of the platform’s audience is made up of children. The Oklahoma lawsuit, like others before it, claims that child predators have used the website to get in contact with, groom and exploit minors. Cases argue that Roblox prioritized profits over safety and didn’t do enough to implement measures that could have kept users safe. The company is now facing a slew of lawsuits over these claims. Florida, Nebraska, Iowa, Indiana and other states have filed similar cases against the company. Nearly 150 individuals and families have also filed child exploitation lawsuits in federal court. A group of social media giants has agreed to settle the first in a series of upcoming trials over claims that their apps are intentionally designed to addict children. The makers of TikTok, Snapchat and YouTube agreed to the settlement last week with the Breathitt County school district in Kentucky. The district claimed that social media apps’ conduct has fueled a “mental health crisis” in America’s children and is seeking money from the platforms to cover the costs schools have incurred fighting these issues. Meta, the company behind Facebook and Instagram, was also named in the lawsuit but is not part of the settlement. The trial is set for June and will still go forward with claims against Meta. Terms of the settlement were not disclosed. That trial will be closely watched, as it is among thousands of social media lawsuits filed in federal court by individuals and other school districts over similar claims. This case has been selected as a bellwether, meaning it is considered representative of the wider group of lawsuits and is the first test for both sides in how their claims will play out before a jury.
