A disturbing incident with social media threats and racial undertones resulted in the arrest of two students. YOUNGSTOWN, N.Y. — "On occasion over the years we've had issues and incidents like every other district. It's just that this one was so over the top," said Lewiston Porter School Superintendent Paul J. Cassari, regarding a recent incident that has thus far resulted in the arrest of two middle school students.  The pair face criminal charges of making a terroristic threat, menacing, aggravated harassment, and conspiracy in connection with a disturbing incident which may result in the suspension of other students as well. According to Cassari the threats were made through social media and involved the threatened use of firearms against individuals at the school. Though Cassari noted that police determined neither of those arrested had access to the type of arms they threatened to use, "the threat was really scary and quite dramatic in terms of the level of violence that this Snapchat group was going to perpetuate." Instagram gave me a delightful surprise a few months ago. My timeline was not restored to chronological order, but I did get a new filter. The company said the feature, which is accessible in its Lens Studio, can be used to create landmarkers for things like statues and storefronts in creators’ local communities. The new feature is rolling out after first being teased at Snap’s Lens Fest event back in December. The new custom landmarkers are discoverable through physical Snapcodes displayed at the landmark or on a Lens creator’s profile, reports TechCrunch. Snap-owned, Snapchat has announced this week that they are now suspending Snapchat integrated third-party apps under consumer protection law to ensure teenagers' safety.Last year, the company clearly gave a stance justifying that the social media platform entirely banned the third-party app developers from integrating anonymous messaging on Snapchat. This was mainly done due to the self-murder case, which alleged the platform for spreading cyberbullying and trolling of an individual who committed suicide because of anonymous blackmailing and abusive messages. As a response, Snapchat had completely banned third-party apps, YOLO and ALK that allow Snapchat users to request unknown messages from fellas and the wider public. Furthermore, Snap clarified that both of these third-party apps aren't affiliated with Snapchat at all. At this moment, Snapchat has made some changes to its policy governing children's protection rights. Snap is going to suspend strangers messaging apps and restrict the age limit of users of 18 and above. It was only a matter of time before TikTok would follow suit with Snapchat, and more recently Instagram and Facebook, by introducing a stories feature. In August, TikTok announced that the platform would begin testing the stories feature as a way to engage the community of users on the platform. Stories allow users to share more casual, personal, and quick content.  Stories have been a huge success on Snapchat, Instagram, and Facebook over recent years. These platforms have all taken inspiration from TikTok since its rise in popularity – take Reels for example – and now it’s time for TikTok to implement a feature originally coined by Snapchat and the Meta group. Currently, TikTok Stories is still in its trial phase among an undisclosed group of users, and we do not yet know when the feature will roll out to all users – but there is no doubt that it will if TikTok wants to align with its competitors.  It will be fascinating to see whether casual users, and also content creators, stay loyal to the platforms on which they are already using the stories feature, or whether TikTok will be the new go-to for sharing stories.
