Carry on the CNY spirit with Snapchat's festive Bitmoji and Lenses

In life before the pandemic, we used to host large reunion dinners and visit relatives’ homes. This year, many of us will be celebrating a more subdued Chinese New Year due to the Movement Control Order restrictions and protocols. However, this annual festivity does not need to be cancelled - it can still go on albeit through a different experience. Staying safe is our priority this year. So, even without being physically present, we can still celebrate this festive season virtually in a unique way on Snapchat. 1. Wear a mask, but make it fashion The first step of staying safe is always wearing your mask correctly. Send a Bitmoji with a festive-themed mask to remind your loved ones to always wear a mask wherever they go. 2. E-angpows are the new norm Just because we can’t do house visits, doesn’t mean the tradition of giving and receiving angpows stop! These days, various banks and e-wallet providers offer e-angpow services. Drop your loved ones a subtle - not really - hint with your personalized Bitmoji, just like this! 3. Virtual decorations are equally important Keep the CNY spirit high up with more festive decorations, like lanterns and peach blossom flowers.…

Imagine a cross between The Dating Game and Are You The One? Strong played Snapchat star “Tampa Bay Jenae”, a girl “who got famous for pulling her buttcheeks apart on Snapchat”, while Ego Nwodim was the show’s DJ. Regina King played Kendra, marketing supervisor from Oakland, looking for a “cringey white dude in his 40s”. Introducing Matt Stainer, who loves Kamala Harris and RBG, Link Bronwin, a fan of Black History Month, and the fedora-wearing, Spin Doctors singing Kevin Farkiss. As Strong said to the latter “We have to pay money when you sing these songs, so please stop”, which is probably quite close to the truth. “I’m a puddle,” admits King’s Kendra. Naugatuck Board of Ed. address racist Snapchat incident

Leaders said they are trying to learn from the incident and help dismantle systemic racism in various ways, such as adding Black and Latino history classes. NAUGATUCK, Conn. — During Naugatuck's Board of Education meeting Thursday evening, education leaders addressed the incident in which the police chief’s daughter was accused of sending racist Snapchat posts two years ago.   “We’ve heard from numerous folks, especially our students of color, black and brown students, that having a voice and being heard is something we need to improve upon,” Superintendent Chris Montini said.  Leaders said they are trying to learn from the incident and help dismantle systemic racism in various ways, such as adding Black and Latino history classes and hiring a more diverse staff.  “We should have been diverse from the start no matter the incident, there should have always been black history taught,” resident Elijah Loucks said.  Community members planning to speak out during the public meeting were not happy they were only able to make comments through the virtual meeting’s chat room. The board stated it would not permit in public session any expression of a personal complaint against school personnel or any person connected with the school system.…

Counselors send schoolwide mental health email

Upper School Counselors Michelle Bracken, Brittany Bronson and Tina McGraw and Athletics Counselor Kat Scardino sent an all-school email Thursday addressing heightened mental health concerns in the school community following the fatal overdose of Sam Chapman, a 16-year-old who attended Milken Community School, on Sunday. Chapman died of a drug overdose at home after connecting with a drug dealer on Snapchat, according to an Instagram post by Dr. Laura Berman, Chapman’s mother. “Sheltering at home. A drug dealer connected with on Snapchat and gave him fentanyl-laced Xanax and he overdosed in his room,” Berman’s post reads. Chapman’s death underscored recent concerns about students’ mental health amid the COVID-19 pandemic, as students lack access to traditional support networks such as spending time with friends or confiding in trusted adults at school. Zoe Shapiro ’23, a member of the school’s Plus One Club that supports students through their struggles with grief and mental health, said she has struggled with depression since sixth grade. Although she said she did not resort to substance abuse, Shapiro said she understands the transition from struggling with poor mental health to abusing substances. “My depression never went into drug abuse or anything like that, but I…
