Yesterday it was reported that Snap has acquired Saturn, which is a calendar app for high school and college students. It is revealed that as part of the acquisition, close to 30 of Saturn’s full-time employees will be joining Snap. However, the financial terms of the deal are not disclosed by the companies. Saturn app comes with a Snapchat-like design that allows teens to easily share and compare their schedules with friends. It also supports features specific to many high school students’ routines like block schedules, rotation calendars and extracurricular activities. Saturn will continue to operate as a standalone app, but it is revealed that Snap will bring Saturn’s calendaring expertise into Snapchat in innovative ways. As per Snap, 80% of U.S high schools have support for Saturn, while the app has built its success by turning scheduling into a more engaging and dynamic experience. Now, with this acquisition, Snap and Saturn are aiming to work together to foster more real-world connections. A man from Kentucky was sentenced this week to 45 years in federal prison for the sexual exploitation of a child in Indiana. Court documents in 2019 show that 30-year-old Darren Ringenberg of Louisville, Kentucky was previously convicted in Kentucky on 20 counts of possession of matter portraying a sexual performance by a minor and was required to register as a sex offender for life. He was released for the Kentucky offense. Police say in June 2023, Ringenberg began using the Snapchat username “devil_hell6969” to communicate with a nine-year-old girl in Monroe County and forced her to send sexually explicit images and videos. He also threatened to hack into her social media accounts and remove all of her friends if she didn’t comply. Ringenberg would go on to direct the girl as to what images to send, how to take the photos, and told her that they could meet in person in the future. He also falsely claimed to be 16 years old and would screen-record and save many of the images and conversations with the girl knowing about it. One young person has been charged, and others are under investigation for allegedly distributing an intimate image of another young person without consent. Last Friday, the RCMP received a report from a school in the province indicating that an image of a student was being shared without consent by several other students in a group chat on Snapchat. So far, police say their investigation has led to one arrest, with others anticipated. Police are strongly cautioning against sharing intimate images over social media apps. They say once an image is sent, the sender has no control over it – including how it is used or shared. Even if an image is deleted off a person’s phone, it may still be available in other forms, including as a picture of a picture. The RCMP is warning that sharing someone’s intimate images without their consent is a criminal offence, and if the images are of someone under the age of 18, they could also face charges related to the distribution of child pornography. (WOLF) — A Luzerne County teenager is accused of plotting over social media to kill several people. The Plymouth Borough Police Department on Monday announced that officers were alerted to an 18-year-old male who had allegedly been messaging a 13-year-old boy on Snapchat "in an attempt to formulate a plan to kill people." Riley Young was taken into custody after an investigation. Police stated there is no significant threat and no apparent means to carry out the threats. Young was charged with criminal use of a communication facility and corruption of minors. He was arraigned on the charges and bail was set at $25,000.
