Donny Gerrard, who scored a hit with “Wildflower” as the lead vocalist for the group Skylark, has died. He was 75. Gerrard died Thursday and had been under hospice care amid a battle with cancer, publicist Bill Carpenter told The Hollywood Reporter. “Our dear brother Donny passed away early this morning at home, peacefully, surrounded by family,” said Adam Ayers from Red Light Management in a statement released Thursday. Born in Vancouver, Canada, on March 19, 1946, Gerrard was the singer for the early 1970s band Skylark, which counted producer David Foster as a keyboardist. Their 1972 breakout ballad “Wildflower” peaked at No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was later sampled on Jamie Foxx’s 2005 platinum-certified hit “Unpredictable.” By 1975, Skylark had split up, and Gerrard focused on a solo career. He signed with Elton John’s Rocket Record Company and dropped the single “(Baby) Don’t Let It Mess Your Mind,” in addition to providing background vocals on John’s 1975 album Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy. Andrea Bordeaux has denied reports that she willingly exited her role as Ella McFair on Run the World over a vaccine mandate ahead of season two, asserting that she was fired. In a lengthy message shared to her Instagram account late Friday, Bordeaux addressed reports that she made the choice to leave the Starz series after she and the show’s studio, Lionsgate TV, were unsuccessful in coming to an agreement around accommodations to the production’s COVID protocols, which includes a full vaccination mandate for cast and crew working in Zone A. It was also reported that her role would not be recast. The Hollywood Reporter parent company Penske Media and sister brand Rolling Stone have acquired a majority interest in the music, art and ideas festival Life is Beautiful, held annually in Las Vegas, Nev., it was announced Friday. The festival, founded in 2013, has hosted over 1 million fans and 600-plus artists. For last year’s three-day festival, which featured headliners Billie Eilish, Green Day and Tame Impala, over 170,000 attended, marking one of the highest-grossing festivals in 2021 nationwide. “Live events are an integral part of Rolling Stone’s future and Life is Beautiful is an incredible platform to realize this vision. Coupled with our significant digital scale and deep journalism, there are infinite possibilities to grow Life is Beautiful in unique and impactful ways,” said Rolling Stone CEO, Gus Wenner. The festival was founded in 2013 by Tony Hsieh, former CEO of Zappos and visionary entrepreneur, as part of a vision to transform Downtown Las Vegas as a cultural hub. The state today reported 38 new COVID-19 related deaths along with 6,617 new coronavirus cases. There were three deaths in the Lakeland viewing area: One person from Beltrami County between the ages of 70 and 74 One person from Itasca County between the ages of 70 and 74 One person from Morrison County between the ages of 85 and 89 The seven-day average for case positivity is at 19.2%, down from 20.0% yesterday and from 22.5% a week ago. It’s the first time in 20 days that the positivity rate has been below 20%. Case growth is also down to 150.3 new cases per 100,000 people, a decrease of 162.8 cases per 100,000 from the day before. There are currently 1,260 people hospitalized for COVID-19, down 233 from a week ago. 194 people are in ICU beds, down 19 from a week ago. Clarinet savant Ben Goldberg had spent the darkest days of the pandemic focused on being a bright creative light, but his release to open up the Year 2022 brings out a spontaneous collaboration with guitar great Nels Cline and drumming eminence Tom Rainey that predates all that. Goldberg, Cline and Rainey are all very good at what they do, but that would mean very little if they were not also good at handling the telepathy end of things. The Art Spirit, Live at the Owl Music Parlor is a document of a club date from May, 2016 that does a pretty good job showing what these musicians are capable of individually and a great job showing what they can do collectively with no premeditation. I think The Art Spirit begins and ends with the state of mind that the trio brings to this gig; they are audacious, playful and even relaxed. Sony Pictures saw its fiscal third-quarter profit jump to $1.3 billion (149.4 billion yen) as the smash international success of Venom: Let There Be Carnage and Spider-Man: No Way Home turbo-charged the studio’s theatrical film business. With gross ticket sales of $1.7 billion, the latest Spider-Man installment is Sony’s most successful film of all time. Sony Corp. reported its October-to-December results Wednesday from its headquarters in central Tokyo. The pictures unit’s earnings represent a 129 percent increase from its profit of $177 million (20.3 billion yen) in the same period in 2020. Revenue soared 270 percent to $4 billion (461.2 billion yen) from $1.67 billion (191.2 billion yen) during the quarter last year. Sony Pictures said it benefited from higher television sales thanks to the licensing of Seinfeld to Netflix, a deal reportedly worth north of $500 million.
