In 2013, when Jennifer Forward-Hayter was fourteen, she would log onto the social network Tumblr from the desktop computer in her family’s working farmhouse in Dorset, England. The machine sat on a dark wooden desk in a hall off the porch. “Proper picturesque English countryside,” she said. On the site, she would look at GIFs and images from the TV shows “Doctor Who” and its spinoff “Torchwood.” Tumblr was Forward-Hayter’s main access to culture—her rural town had no museums, galleries, or art scene. (She is now a photographer in London.) In late 2016, when she left home for university, her Tumblr use trailed off; there was plenty of cultural discussion to be found at art school. But during the early months of the pandemic, on a whim, she logged back on. “My dashboard”—the main Tumblr feed—“was still weirdly active. People I followed a long time ago were still posting stuff, which I thought was very strange,” she told me. “I fell back into it quite easily.” Since then, she has spent time on Tumblr every day. A copy of Action Comics No. 1 flew off the auction block Thursday, selling for $3.18 million, the fourth-largest sum ever for a comic book. 1938’s Action Comics No. 1 is considered one of the most important comics of all time. Within its pages, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster introduce the world to Superman, the hero who launched the superhero genre in earnest. This particular copy of the DC Comics title is called “the Rocket Copy” because the cover features a rocket stamp put there by the 13-year-old who purchased the issue from a newsstand in 1938. Heritage Auctions handled the sale. Thursday’s Rocket Copy sale stands behind an issue of Amazing Fantasy No. 15, the first appearance of Spider-Man, that sold for $3.6 million in September 2021, and two other copies of Action Comics No. 1. The Rocket Copy is graded at a condition of 6.0 by the CGC, a service that authenticates the condition of comics. The other Action Comics issues that have sold for more were an 8.5 that went for $3.25 million in April 2021, and a 9.0 that sold for $3.2 million in August 2014. Two weeks after updating its iOS app to block all 'sensitive' content to ensure compliance with Apple's App Store guidelines, Tumblr has announced that censorship will be optional for all iOS users. Tumblr initially blocked hundreds of words and phrases from its iOS app last month to prevent a repeat of the 2018 incident when the app was kicked out of the App Store over child pornography allegations. The app was finally reinstated the following month after the website claimed to have cleaned up its act. Tumblr has often come under fire for its liberal censorship policies that many argue encourage graphic content on the platform. While that hasn't typically been a problem on Android, Apple's strict App Store policies meant that the app often got itself into hot water over its mature content on iOS, necessitating the censorship announced last month. However, as it turns out, the company is backtracking from its stance and will allow iPhone users to access mature content after all. As part of its ongoing efforts to stay on the right side of App Store rules, Tumblr is adding a Sensitive Content toggle to its iOS app. The setting is enabled by default, and it keeps posts with sensitive tags out of recommendations, blocks search results with sensitive tags and hides blogs "that are explicit in nature." Disabling the toggle will allow users to search for tags that might include posts of a sensitive nature and see recommendations that might include suggestive or sensitive content. Switching off the setting will also allow you to tap through an overlay on blogs that have been marked as explicit. However, you still won't be able to view posts that have been flagged as explicit. It's not entirely clear how Tumblr defines "explicit" in this context (Engadget has asked for clarification). Tumblr banned porn and realistic depictions of human genitals in December 2018 after Apple temporarily removed the app from the App Store.
