The additions of Philip Broberg and Dmitri Samorukov on an emergency basis brings the Oilers’ defence corps up to the minimum six required. The squad is currently missing no fewer than five (5) left-shot defenders: Kris Russell and  Markus Niemelainen are both injured, while  Darnell Nurse, Duncan Keith and William Lagesson are all in COVID protocol. That leaves an ultra-thin corps on the left side of Slater Koekkoek along with Broberg and Samorukov, who will be making his NHL debut next game unless another defender is cleared to play. Samorukov, 22, was touted as a dark horse to make the Oilers out of camp this…

Author of the article: Kelly Egan Darlene Pearson is the co-ordinator of a group called Centretown Neighbourwoods that has a network of about 30 volunteers who are cataloguing and monitoring the big trees in the central Ottawa neighbourhood. Photo by Errol McGihon /Postmedia I have the good fortune of living on a beautifully treed street. It can look cathedral-like in summer, especially the section with majestic maples, their tallest limbs — braiding over the dappled road — leaving a tunnel of cooling shade. Advertisement This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. So when the city put a big red X on a foundational maple last month, it felt like an impending act of wreckage — like someone stealing the town clock — altering the very way the sun has fallen, the seasons counted, for 70-some years.  Funny about big, old city trees. They’re both free and priceless, belong to no one and everyone. With climate change and housing intensification — on top of murderous insects and freak storms — residents all across Ottawa (and maybe the pandemic helped) are watching their urban canopy with more organized eyes. Delineating work tasks from personal ones in the case of injury is becoming an increasing area of focus for employment lawyers. Author of the article: Matt Scace As remote work enters a second year as a mainstream concept of work, injuries in the workplace have become a proliferating grey zone for employers, employment lawyers and worker compensation boards to navigate. But when home is where the workplace is, delineating work tasks from personal ones in the case of injury is becoming an increasing area of focus for employment lawyers. “This remote work environment throws disarray into things because it’s kind of a weird context physically where the injuries can occur,” Richard Johnson, a partner at Vancouver-based Ascent Employment Law told Postmedia News. A Quebec ruling earlier this month found that an Air Canada call centre employee who injured…

Author of the article: Mark Morris Indians on Vacation is the first of four mini operas comprising The Wild Rose Project from Edmonton Opera. Photo by Supplied /Postmedia My favourite story of 2021 was unquestionably the Edmonton Opera’s Wild Rose Opera Project , for which the company commissioned four new short operas for filming and streaming on the web. Advertisement This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. It was inventive, showed what could be done in lockdown, and supported Alberta-connected creators and artists. It reminded us that opera is not just a product of the past, but a living, always regenerating art form. It had its own sub-theme of stories loosely around the theme of mental health, and produced four very different works that were both entertaining and thoughtful. Best of all, it reached out to Edmonton Opera’s faithful audiences, and indeed still does, for all four operas are available for streaming free . It was a fitting farewell from departed general director Tim Yakemic, and a harbinger of the future for incoming artistic director Joel Ivany. yegarts@postmedia.com Edmonton Journal Headline News Sign up to receive daily headline news from the Edmonton Journal, a division of…

“I was with my team on probably the first or second day of shooting. It was all hands on deck and we were throwing fake dirt on the actors because I was like, ‘It has to be dirtier’ — and we were already up to our elbows in fake dirt and distressing the material,” says Janie Bryant. “And I turned to my team and said, ‘I didn’t think that I was ever going to be back here again. But here we are.'” The veteran costume designer relates in her Tennessee drawl, and sounding a little like Al Pacino’s Michael Corleone rejoining the Mafia family, that she’s in a place she endearingly calls “Western-ville.” And she’s all in, outfitting a literal cast of thousands for Taylor Sheridan’s sprawling drama 1883, which premiered this week on Paramount+ as the prequel to the streamer’s hit drama Yellowstone, and is getting the biggest numbers for a cable debut since 2015. Bryant, who garnered an Emmy for her costumes on the HBO series Deadwood, has been in these parts before. But in the interim, she became practically a household name herself as the era-defining mastermind of Mad Men’s cosmopolitan ‘60s fashions, and not incidentally also…

Author of the article: Bruce Deachman Photo by Ashley Fraser /Postmedia An Ottawa police officer involved in a September collision in which two people were seriously injured will not be charged. Advertisement This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. The decision, following an investigation by the province’s Special Investigations Unit, was announced Thursday.
