ClaimGeorge Orwell's 1984 was banned in the US for being pro-communist and banned in the USSR for being anti-communist.ReportingAdvertisementsOn September 2 2021, a Facebook post featured an image suggesting that George Orwell’s 1984 was banned in the United States for pro-communist sentiments, but that it was also banned in the USSR for anti-communist sentiments.A screenshot from Tumblr showed a bookstore’s shelf with a placard for “Freedom to Read Week” (an annual event in Canada), denoting a particular book as having been “challenged,” “seized,” “banned,” or “burned.” 1984 was marked as “banned” in “USSR,” “China,” and “United States.”A written portion of the image stated that 1984 had been “banned in USSR for being anti-communist,” and “banned in US for being pro-communist”:At the bottom of the image, Tumblr user ours-a-g-a commented:The book is 1984, which is neither. It’s anti-authoritarian, which tells you a lot.No additional information was included in the Facebook post. The first visible comment on the Facebook post read:I’m surprised to learn that it’s banned in the US, as I own several copies and have yet to be un-personed.A reverse image search located an earliest crawled iteration on Tumblr from March 2 2021; that timing was consistent with Canada’s annual Freedom to Read…

In an…interesting piece about Sonic the Hedgehog porn, which has to be the very definition of a slow news day thinkpiece, Slate writer Luke Winkie declared Tumblr “ancient”: “Think of the vast reams of erotic Harry Potter slashfic that linger around ancient Tumblr,” he says. I’ll chafe at that insinuation; it’s the same insinuation made all around the Internet, especially on sites like Twitter or TikTok, or wherever Gen Z and younger millennials can be found: Tumblr is an old, dying thing, and not at all important to the current meme or fandom culture. Part of this might be how Tumblr’s management strains to make it seem as popular as humanly possible, like when they rolled out a subscription model before quietly taking down every reference to it on the website as if it was just a summer day fool’s joke gone too far. Ah, Tumblr Post+ you were a dumb idea, with an even dumber execution. Of course, Tumblr isn’t the most popular social media site on the Internet; its humor lies in a niche place, and its fandom culture can be difficult to navigate due to years of both healthy discussions and in-fighting. Still, Tumblr breaks out of…

Tumblr and Civilized Worldwide Inc. have gone live with the cannabis.tumblr.com blog, positioned as the new home of cannabis, hemp and CBD on Tumblr. In addition, Tumblr will welcome legal category advertisers, bringing U.S. consumers and brands together via engaging, educational and beautiful content. Benzinga’s articles can also be found on the Tumblr blog.             “This is a fast-paced, ever-changing, often-complicated industry that remains rife with stigma, misunderstanding and mixed messages. The current social media environment of restricted avenues to share smart, informative content perpetuates this,” said Terri MacDonald Riedle, CEO and co-founder of Civilized. “I can’t think of another industry more in need of avenues to share and engage with curious consumers. We are so excited about our partnership with Tumblr and the trust they’ve placed in us at Civilized as their exclusive cannabis content partner; but mostly, I’m so proud to be aligned with an organization willing to demonstrate this type of industry-first leadership.” Tricia Vanderslice, president and chief commercial officer of Civilized also pointed out how online communities are critical cornerstones in any strategic marketer’s arsenal. “Yet, this amazing plant-based industry has been virtually denied access to leveraging social media best practices despite being an over twenty billion dollar global,”…

Daniel Obaweya aka @nigeriangothic playing dress up at James Veloria.Photo: Courtesy of Liana Satenstein / @liana_avaThe Instagram account @nigeriangothic is one of the most information-packed archive feeds on the platform. There you’ll find an old JanSport ad from the early 2000s, a photo of Missy Elliott smoking a joint from a 2000 issue of Vibe magazine, the animated opening of Toni Braxton’s “He Wasn’t Man Enough for Me,” and a black-and-white photograph of a Hajendoa warrior from Sudan that dates back to 1938. Dazed editor in chief Ib Kamara, fashion label Wales Bonner, editor Dan Thawley, and model Paloma Elsesser are all followers, though the mysterious owner of the account has never revealed himself, preferring to let the images speak for themselves (a rarity in the fashion industry). The account is run by Daniel Obaweya, a 23-year-old from Lagos, Nigeria, who spends hours on the Internet, clicking through and amassing stellar images. His curation has gained him gigs too: He’s worked with the London label Mowalola and Dazed, and researched extensively for a shoot about auntie culture in Nigeria that was styled by Gabriella Karefa-Johnson and published in the November 2020 issue of Vogue.Obaweya has been in New York for…
